Explorers Come From Far Away
Guided Notes
Day 1
New World
Explorers
traveled
across
the
Atlantic
Ocean
from
countries
in
Europe.
An
explorer
is
a
traveler
who
searches
for
new
places.
Europeans,
like
Christopher
Columbus
from
Spain,
had
been
trading
with
people
in
Africa
and
Asia
for
many
years.
They
got
gold,
silver,
metals,
and
furs.

Asia
was
a
long
trip.
Spain
paid
for
his
trip.
Columbus
thought
he
could
get
to
Asia
much
faster
if
he
sailed
across
the
Atlantic
Ocean.
Columbus
did
not
find
a
shorter
route,
or
direction
to
travel.
He
landed
on
islands
in
the
Caribbean
and
claimed
the
land
for
Spain.
Many
Europeans
came
after
Columbus
and
felt
they
had
a
right
to
conquer,
or
take
over,
the
land.
For King and Country
Kings
and
queens
in
Europe
wanted
to
send
explorers
to
the
New
World.
New
land
and
riches
were
big
motives,
or
reasons,
for
exploration.
Merchants
and
missionaries
wanted
to
expand
their
knowledge
and
spread
Christianity.
When
explorers
claimed
land
in
new
places,
they
claimed
it
for
their
king
and
queen.
Their
travels
were
“for
King
and
Country”.
This
meant
that
when
explorers
found
the
land,
it
belonged
to
their
king
and
country.
Day 2
Hernando de Soto
Hernando
de
Soto
was
an
explorer
from
Spain.
He
went
on
many
trips
to
explore
unknown
lands.
He
was
the
first
European
to
explore
the
New
World.
He
was
looking
for
gold
and
slaves.
While
exploring
he
met
many
Native
Americans
including
those
from
the
village
of
Cofitachiqui.
He
captured
the
Lady
of
Cofitachiqui
since
he
thought
that
she
could
lead
him
to
more
land
and
riches.
He
mistreated
the
Native
Americans
that
he
met
along
his
way.
He
never
found
the
gold
and
silver
he
was
looking
for.
He
traveled
north
from
Spanish
Florida
and
encountered
Native
Americans
in
South
Carolina.
But,
he
did
not
establish
a
permanent
settlement
in
South
Carolina.
Instead,
he
traveled
to
many
places
throughout
southeastern
United
States
in
search
of
riches.
Day 3
Jean Ribault
Jean

was
an
explorer
from
France.
He
was
chosen
to
lead
an
exploration
to
the
“New
World”
to
claim
land
for
French
people
called
the
Huguenots,
to
compete
with
the
Spanish.
They
called
their
settlement
Port
Royal
and
built
a
fort
called
Charlesfort
(located
near
present
day
Parris
Island),
to
honor
the
French
king,
King
Charles
IX.
Once
the
colony
was
set
up,
Ribault
returned
to
France
to
get
more
supplies
for
his
men.
A
colony
is
a
place
that
is
controlled
by
a
far
away
ruler.
When
he
arrived
in
France
he
had
problems
and
wasn’t
able
to
return
back
to
South
Carolina
with
the
much
needed
supplies.
The
men
at
Port
Royal
struggled
because
they
had
trouble
finding
food
and
fighting
with
local
Native
Americans.
After
a
while,
they
gave
up
and
headed
back
to
France.
Juan

Spain.
He
landed
in
what
used
to
be
called
Charlesfort
(located
at
present

and
renamed
it
Santa
Elena.
Pardo
was
ordered
to
explore
inland
and
claim
land
for
Spain.
He
met
many
Indian
tribes
along
his
way
including
the
Yemassee
on
his
journey.
He
tried
to
make
friends
with
the
Native
Americans
because
the
Spanish
were
beginning
to
see
how
important
trade
was.
Pardo
traveled
the
midlands
and
up
through
the
Up
Country.
He
even
traveled
through
the
village
of
Cofitachiqui,
just
like
De
Soto.
He
was
searching
for
a
route
to
silver
mines.
Unfortunately,
Native
Americans
attacked
the
forts
that
Pardo
built,
including
Santa
Elena.
Spain
was
beaten
and
no
longer
tried
to
set
up
forts
and
claim
land
inland.
Day 4
Henry

Henry
Woodward
was
an
explorer
from
England.
His
ship
was
called
Carolina.
He
and
his
men
landed
at
Bull’s
Bay.
He
established
the
first
English
settlement,
or
place
where
people
start
a
new
community,
in
South
Carolina
on
the
Ashley
River
and
named
it
Charles
Fort

day
Charleston).

he
traveled
and
explored
the
interior
of
South
Carolina,
he
became
friends
with
the
Native
Americans
by
respecting
them
and
treating
them
fairly.
He
also
traded
with
the
Native
Americans.

an
explorer

England.
He
was
hired
by
the
English
settlers
in
Barbados
to
explore
the
coast

South
Carolina.
He
looked
for
good
land
for
plantations.
Plantations
are
large
farms.
He
claimed
an
area
now
known
as
Hilton
Head.
Later,
English

became
an
