The Skeletal Muscles
There are about 650 muscles in the
human body. They enable us to
move, maintain posture and
generate heat. In this section we will
only study a sample of the major
muscles.
Masseter
Facial muscle
Closes Jaw
Zygomaticus
Facial muscle
Raises corner of mouth during a smile
“Smiling” muscle
Orbicularis oris
Facial muscle
Closes and Protrudes (puckers) Lips
“kissing” muscle
Buccinator
Facial and chewing muscle
Compresses Cheek (whistling/sucking) and
holds food between teeth while chewing
Orbicularis oculi
Facial muscle
Blinks and Closes Eyes
Temporalis
Chewing muscle
Closes jaw
Frontalis
Facial muscle
Raises Eyebrows and wrinkles forehead
Sternocleidomastoideus
Flexes neck and Rotates Head
Trapezius
Extend Head, Adduct/Elevate
Scapula
Platysma
Lowers jaw (pulls corners of
mouth inferiorly)
