 The “Minoans” developed
a great civilization on
Crete.
2995 B.C. - MINOANS

Built palaces covered in dolphin
paintings.


1400’s B.C.-MYCENAEAN’S

Lived on the mainland

They invaded Crete & conquered the
Minoans.

Developed a written and spoken
language.
1200’s B.C. - Troy

Troy was a nation that neighbored
Greece. (Modern Day Turkey)

Love-hate relationship
1195 B.C. - Trojan War




Greek Princess left her husband for
a Trojan Prince.
Trojan War began to get her back.
Greeks gifted a horse with soldiers
hidden inside.
Soldiers snuck out and burned down
Troy because they wouldn’t give the
princess back.
1100’s-750 B.C.- Dark Ages

After the “Trojan War” the Greek
civilization mysteriously collapsed.

Culture stopped progressing and
Greeks only focused on survival.
750 B.C.- Acropolis

Greeks built their homes on top of
high rocky hills for protection from
invaders. (Acropolis)

Villages with small farms developed
below and around the Acropolises.
745 B.C. - City-States
Develop

Eventually enough small villages
joined together and developed their
own governments.

These tiny nations were called citystates.
735 B.C. : Rulers of
City-States

Kings

Aristocrats (members of rich &
powerful families).

Tyrants (rulers who seized power)
overthrew the “rich” folks b/c they
were out numbered.
594 B.C.- Democracy in
Greece

People overthrew the tyrants.

They created a democracy (when
citizens govern themselves.)

Athens became the leading
democratic city-state

Male citizens could vote on laws.
