Topic: Systems of the Human Body (Jigsaw Learning Activity) Grade Level: Intermediate Objectives: Students will gain a basic understanding of how the following systems of the human body work. Skeletal System Muscular System Respiratory System Digestive System Circulatory System Nervous System Project Page: http://www.nlsd.will.k12.il.us/~bentley/hbjigsaw/hbjigs aw.htm Materials: Systems Note Sheets (downloadable from the Project Page) Brain Pop movies (linked to Project Homepage) Systems Test (downloadable from the Project Page) Student iMovie Examples (linked to Project Page) Procedure: First Grouping: Divide students into groups of five or six It is recommended that you divide students into groups of five. This allows the teacher to demonstrate how the project will work using one of the six body systems. If class size is small, you may choose to eliminate 1-2 body systems Each group will become an expert on the body systems that is assigned. Each group will print out the note sheet needed for their system, view the weblinks for their system, and view the BrainPop movie for their system. Second Grouping: Regroup the students into six new groups Each group must have at least one person from each of the body systems. Students will share their expertise with each member of their group. After the sharing period, the groups will take the test with their groups and notes. Created by: Michelle Lombardo 05/06 Culminating Activity: Students will come together to demonstrate something that they have learned during the jigsaw activity. They may choose to act out food moving through the digestive system, or how the blood circulates through the heart. Technology Extension Activity: Demonstrations can be video taped and downloaded on to the computer. Students can use the iMovie software to add special effects (sounds, transitions, backgrounds, titles, and credits) Final projects can be saved as a QuickTime movie and linked to a project showcase page on the Internet.
