Job Title:
User Applications Specialist
Job Summary
A User Applications Specialist supports a user department by developing and maintaining
databases, queries, reports, web pages, and analyses using standard office and web
development software, and university enterprise-wide systems. The Specialist will be an
advanced user of the software applications, applying specialized knowledge of the
functionality of the software applications to meet the information requirements of the
department.
Nature of Work
This is specialized information systems support and data analysis work requiring knowledge
of hardware and software that is typically used in office environments for data management
and/or web communication. This is a non-exempt position requiring an intermediate level
of knowledge that is typically obtained through work experience and either specific
vocational training (e.g., Microsoft Office User Specialist training) or an Associate’s degree
in PC applications. The duties are distinguished from the lower-level Technology Support
Specialist position in that the primary focus of this position is on the use and application
of PC and web software programs to meet complex information management and
communication requirements. It is distinguished from higher level IT positions in that the
primary function is the regular use and maintenance of standard PC applications and
established data systems. Typical applications that may be used in this position include, but
are not limited to Microsoft Access and Excel, Crystal Reports, Visual Studio, SQL,
FrontPage, and the Macromedia and Adobe suites, etc. The focus of this position is on the
technical aspects of web page development, as opposed to marketing and communications
positions that focus on written content and graphic design. In order to fulfill the
requirements of the position, the Specialist may be required to develop queries and reports
from university-wide enterprise systems, such as PeopleSoft HR and Financials or the
Banner Student Information System. This position is typically located within a user
department, and may also serve as a source of general computing knowledge about desktop
software, hardware and peripherals. This position may supervise an Information
Technology Support Specialist or student workers.
