Study Guide - Earth, Sun, and Moon
Standard 4-3.2 - Compare the properties (including the type of surface and atmosphere) and
the location of Earth to the Sun, which is a star, and the Moon.
Focus Statements:
1. Earth…
a. has a rocky surface as a planet and also has water on it.
b. has an atmosphere of gases around it.
c. is a natural satellite that orbits millions of miles from the Sun as the third
planet in the solar system.
d. always has of it lit by the Sun.
e. supports life with a protective atmosphere, oxygen, plants, food, water, and
gravity.
2. Sun…
a. is a small star (a ball of glowing gases that is extremely hot).
b. does not have a rocky surface and its atmosphere glows and gives off heat.
c. is located at the center of the solar system.
d. has many planets that revolve around it, including Earth.
e. is the largest star in our solar system.
3. Moon…
a. is a natural satellite that orbits the Earth.
b. has a rocky, dusty surface with many craters and no water.
c. has no atmosphere.
d. always has half of it lit by the Sun.
e. reflects sunlight.
f. is Earth’s closest neighbor.
Standard 4-3.8 - Recognize the purpose of telescopes.
Focus Statement:
1. A telescope can gather more light than the eye, so it makes faint, faraway
objects seem brighter and closer.
2. Telescopes are used to help observe objects in space.
