Geometric Shapes
Geometric shapes are found in the design of most products and structures. Some are more obvious
than others. You can look around you and identify a geometric shape. One of the most common types
of geometric shapes is the rectangle, a rectangle can be found in almost every feature of a residential
home such as doors, windows, etc.
A circle is plane figure generated
around a centerpoint. All circles contain 360 degrees. The diameter is the
distance from circumference to circumference through the center.
A polygon is many sided plane figure. All polygons are bounded by straight lines. A regular polygon
has equal sides and equal angles. An irregular polygon has unequal sides and unequal angles.
An angles is the intersection of two lines going in two different directions.
Angles are measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds. There is 60
minutes in one degree and 60 seconds in one minute.
A triangle is three-sided polygon with three interior angles. The sum of the three angles of a triangle is
always 180 degrees.
A straight line is the shortest distance between two points. It is commonly referred to as a line.
A quadrilateral is a four-sided polygon with four interior angles. The sum of the four interior angles of a quadrilateral is always 360 degrees. Squares and rectangles are
examples of quadrilaterals.
