Practice Name
Dispensary
Patients Requiring Specific Brand Due To Allergy Or
Adverse Reaction
Objectives

To ensure that patients requiring specific types or brands of medication are highlighted
as such and why, with an audit trail as to who has authorised it.
Description
This procedure covers all medications issued to patients
Responsibility
All dispensary and clinical staff are potentially involved in this procedure.
Procedure / Process




It is the practice and CCG policy to prescribe the most cost effective medication to treat
the patient. With this in mind whenever there is a generic equivalent this should be
prescribed providing there are no bio-equivalence issues.
If a dispenser comes across a repeat in the brand format where there is a generic
alternative this will be highlighted to the dispensary manager to change. This will be
done with a note on the patients repeat slip advising them of the change.
Items prescribed in the slow release format should have special care taken and items
for epilepsy should remain the same whether brand or generic.
If the patient has a specific need for a brand due to an allergy or adverse reaction then
this should be noted in the section for the script directions immediately followed by the
dose instructions.
