ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS AND IMPACTS
Anglia Ruskin University Students’ Union recognises that its daily activities may result in adverse impacts on the environment. We will follow the
guidelines in the University’s Environmental Management System (EMS) to ensure that, as a minimum, legal compliance is met, if not surpassed.
Where practical we will aim to eliminate or minimise the adverse environmental impacts and prevent pollution. We have identified the following aspects
of our activities that may interact with the environment, and the resultant impacts, whether positive or negative, on the environment.

Greenhouse gases
Climate change
Use of landfill
Natural resource depletion due to transport fuels and processing
Carbon emissions contributing to climate change
Resource depletion (forestry, habitat) potentially contributing to
climate change
Energy usage (production and recycling)
Litter (distribution)
Use of landfill (disposal)
Natural resource depletion
Carbon emissions contributing to climate change
Energy usage (manufacture, delivery, disposal)
Resource depletion (manufacture, delivery)
Contribution to climate change (manufacturing processes, delivery)
Supply chain issues (workforce welfare, habitat loss, land degradation,
animal welfare)
Performance
Indicator
Travel
Increase number of
shared business miles
through purchase of
vehicles with larger
seating capacities,
whilst giving
consideration to CO2
emissions and fuel
economy
Monitoring method
Current performance 2011-12
Target performance
2012-13
Compare business
mileage with previous
years’ totals
Hybrid pool vehicle leased for 3 years (200912). Journeys for which hybrid vehicle is
used are not using vehicle’s performance
potential. Vehicle also too small for number
of staff using the vehicle for shared journeys
Lease Ford Grand CMax
7-seater for 3 years
commencing November
2012 to increase seating
capacity of pool car,
increase shared business
mileage
Ensure staff and officers
share vehicles wherever
practicable. 50% of all
journeys should be
shared
Record all mileage and
shared vehicle use – staff
expenses form
Currently being calculated
Set target according to
previous year. Lobby
University Finance to
include business mileage
on expenses forms,
including public
transport mileage
Minimise fuel
consumption on
company travel in pool
cars through all staff
and officers being
trained in fuel efficiency
driving techniques
Training tick sheet as part
of pool car use induction
Pool car performance not currently measured
Systems to be put in
place to measure car
performances (recording
mileage and diesel
consumption)
Second company car due for renewal March
2012. Need for larger seating capacity to
enable increased shared journeys.
Ford Grand CMax 7-seater vehicle leased for
3 years (2012-15)
Fuel consumption/mileage
measured on an annual
basis
Company car performance not currently
measured
Include fuel economy
driving tips in staff
handbook
Result 2012-13
Performance
Indicator
Minimise fuel
consumption on minibus
travel by all drivers
being MIDAS trained, to
include fuel efficiency
tips
Cross campus meetings
to be held by video
conference where
possible
Printing
Increase the amount of
paper recycled by
including a logo on all
SU publications
encouraging recycling
after use
Externally printed SU
publications (e.g.
handbook and fliers etc)
are printed by a
sustainable printing
company
Monitoring method
Current performance 2011-12
Target performance
2012-13
Continue 100% pass
rate
MIDAS training
documents and training
records
100% pass rate
Annual calendar
28% of all meetings were by video
conference
29% of all cross campus meetings were by
video conference
Meetings schedule
revised due to
constitutional
amendments and crosscampus meetings
planned to be by video
conference wherever
possible
Keep a log of all
publications
Marketing department requested to include
recycling logo on Union publications in order
to set current percentage and keeping a log
of future publications
Representation and
Communications Manager
to review amount of
sustainably sourced
materials/recycled
materials used each year
Currently use a sustainable printing
company.
Target of 75% of all
publications to include
recycling logo.
Accurately research
number of copies needed
to reduce wastage
Continue to use
sustainable printing
company and encourage
clubs and societies,
through training, and
venues, to use the same
company for their
publications
Representation and
Communications
Manager to continue to

review annually
Performance
Indicator
Meetings to be
paperless where
possible and reduce
reliance on paper for
other aspects of SU
activity
Monitoring method
Current performance 2011-12
Photocopy figures and
copies of emails sending
electronic papers
Officers and some managers use iPads for
meetings. Papers sent electronically for
meetings where possible.
Elections converted from paper to online. All
elections activity done via website.
Use of website and social media for
communicating messages in addition to
posters.
Energy
Minimise energy
consumption in SU
premises
Purchasing
Paper purchased for
internal purposes is at
least 75% recycled
paper, or is made from
NAPM accredited
recycled paper, or is
made from pulp from
certified sustainable
sources.
Target performance
2012-13
Create log of paperless
meetings. Investigate
possibility of further iPad
usage
Continue paper-free
elections and use of
electronic
communications.
Currently un-measurable,
but covered in all staff
and officer training and
staff handbook
Awareness raised through Green Impact,
staff meetings and posters/stickers
Installation of energy
dashboard will assist
with measuring energy
consumption. Continue
to monitor temperature
levels and lobby
University to correct
faulty systems
Stationery log and
invoices
Paper on both campuses conforms to
performance indicator
Maintain current levels
whilst seeking affordable
alternatives with higher
percentage of recycled
paper content
