Outcome PA9.3 Investigate the roles and responsibilities of members of the societies studied and those of citizens in contemporary Canada. Task1: What is the criterion for being a citizen in? (What are the roles and responsibilities of a citizen?) Choose THREE of the following societies to examine: Mésopotamie – Ancient Egypt – Ancient Greece Ancient Rome – Aztec, Incan Mayan civilizations – Médiéval Europe Renaissance Europe – Ancient China – Feudal Japan- Iroquois First Nation Society 1 Society 2 Society 3 Ancient Greece Ancient Rome- Aztec Ancient Egypt The males were split into three group’s citizens, slaves or metoici. They men 18 years or older and that has 3 generations living in the city were a citizen, they had all the rights. Everyone had to believe in the gods. They god gave everyone power. Women weren’t citizens they had to work or be put to death. All men were citizens but at different levels and powers. A citizen of ancient of Rome had all legal rights and people born in Rome were dividing into classes depending on where they lived. People had to respect laws and rules or else they would be faced with consciences and even death They would have to respect laws and rules also they had people who had more power than others and they would have to obey authority and if they didn’t they would have harsh or death also different classes of people. Task 2: What is the criterion for being a citizen in Canada? (What are the roles and responsibilities of being a citizen of Canada?) The responsibilities of a Canadian citizen working together to build a stronger Canada and making sure our dreams, goals and values are reflected in our institutions. We are a free democratic, the country is multi-cultural which means any religion in accepted in Canada. Everyone in Canada has equal treatment. Everyone over the age of 18 can vote in Canada and everyone has the right to run for an election. Also everyone has the right to apply for a passport and everyone can leave Canada to another country, or move through the provinces and territories. You have to respect your country the laws within in it and the people who live in your country also help who are trying to make Canada a better place. Task 3: Choose one of the societies in the above chart and then compare them with Canada. What are the similarities and differences between the two societies? Ancient Greece compared to Canada- The comparisons in Canada and ancient Greece is that both societies have religions that they believe in and that they allow to be practices in their country and cities. Different people have powers in both people for example the kings had power over what happens in the cities or areas like today Canada has mayors and prime ministers and premiers that decided on what can happen among the communities. Both societies have a voting rule but they two societies have different laws on who can and can’t vote for example in ancient Greece only men were able to vote and in Canada you must be 18 years or older to be eligible to vote. Similarities Differences Both have rulers and important members of government ex: Kings, mayors, premiers and Prime Ministers. The Green Party fully believed that everyone in Canada has the right and freedom from discrimination they wanted to the people of Canada to live without the feeling of discrimination. They made laws that people must follow and to prohibit discrimination. Social Class Roles and Responsibilities Poor/Slaves Working Class Society: Ancient Greece Slaves were to work for people who would buy them, normally they had no family members or homes they has a poor living standard. They worked many hours. There was way more poor people then rich Society: Ancient Rome In ancient Rome officials would protect the rich areas and working class areas of cities but not in the poor areas so the poor areas weren’t safe and full of violence. The slaves would work and if they didn’t they could be injures or killed. It was a hard life as a poor or slave in ancient Rome. Rich The rich people in ancient Greece lived in the nicest homes around they were thought to be famous because of their money and since there wasn’t a bunch of rich people that’s how they became famous they would work to but not much they ladies would still do chores and house work but she wouldn’t do as much as the poor and working class because they could afford maids and servants in their homes. The rich in ancient Rome was the best quality of life they would work but their work wasn’t as hard as they people in the lower classed since they could afford lots many people would buy slaves or hired maids or servants for their homes and also to do their work. The rich people enjoyed fancy things and to have those thing they hired or bought slaves to do their work people. Their role was to make money to support their families and they had to work long hours and days without many days off. The rich in ancient china had the most privileges of all the people they were close to the empire and the empire and them were “buddies” in away the rich had better clothing and homes they worked for the empire or they were at the top of any other job they also were slave owners not many were though a low percent. The Big Question: From your study of these societies, what stood out most for you as a similarity of between Canada and your ancient society and what stood out as a difference? What stood out for a difference from ancient China to Canada is how they treated people and how it was a hard life if you weren’t born into the right family and how they distributed the power threw kings and taking over places. The similarities are that they have some kind for government that had power over the country and that had someone who had the most power over the country to make decisions.
