those of citizens in contemporary Canada.
Task1:
What is the criterion for being a citizen in? (What are the roles and responsibilities of
a citizen?)
Choose THREE of the following societies to examine:
Mésopotamie – Ancient Egypt – Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome – Aztec, Incan Mayan civilizations – Médiéval Europe
Renaissance Europe – Ancient China – Feudal Japan- Iroquois First Nation
Society 1
Society 2
Society 3
Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome- Aztec
Ancient Egypt
The males were split into three
group’s citizens, slaves or
metoici. They men 18 years or
older and that has 3
generations living in the city
were a citizen, they had all the
rights. Everyone had to
believe in the gods. They god
gave everyone power. Women
weren’t citizens they had to
work or be put to death. All
men were citizens but at
different levels and powers.
A citizen of ancient of Rome had all
legal rights and people born in
Rome were dividing into classes
depending on where they lived.
People had to respect laws and
rules or else they would be faced
with consciences and even death
They would have to respect
laws and rules also they
had people who had more
power than others and they
would have to obey
authority and if they didn’t
they would have harsh or
death also different classes
of people.
Task 2:
What is the criterion for being a citizen in Canada?
(What are the roles and responsibilities of being a citizen of Canada?)
The responsibilities of a Canadian citizen working together to build a stronger Canada and making
sure our dreams, goals and values are reflected in our institutions. We are a free democratic, the
country is multi-cultural which means any religion in accepted in Canada. Everyone in Canada has
equal treatment. Everyone over the age of 18 can vote in Canada and everyone has the right to run
for an election. Also everyone has the right to apply for a passport and everyone can leave Canada
to another country, or move through the provinces and territories. You have to respect your country
the laws within in it and the people who live in your country also help who are trying to make Canada
a better place.
Task 3:
Choose one of the societies in the above chart and then compare them with Canada.
What are the similarities and differences between the two societies?
Ancient Greece compared to Canada- The comparisons in Canada and ancient Greece is
that both societies have religions that they believe in and that they allow to be practices in
their country and cities. Different people have powers in both people for example the kings
had power over what happens in the cities or areas like today Canada has mayors and
prime ministers and premiers that decided on what can happen among the communities.
Both societies have a voting rule but they two societies have different laws on who can and
can’t vote for example in ancient Greece only men were able to vote and in Canada you
must be 18 years or older to be eligible to vote.
Similarities

Differences

of government ex: Kings, mayors,
premiers and Prime Ministers.

in Olympic games

P.A. 9.3
Investigate examples of the oppression of rights of particular groups or individuals in
societies studied including examples in Canada (e.g., slavery, limited franchise,
restrictions on property ownership)
Task 1:
Identify a specific time in history when the rights of an individual were limited and explain how
the group achieved equal rights.

Limited Franchise-

give some background information into the event.
Oppressive Event:
Oppressive Event:
Oppressive Event:
Women’s rights. Women
couldn’t vote or run, be a
candidate. In 1916 women
were able to vote in
elections. In 1907 married
women had the same legal
rights men. In 1952 equal
pay was established.
Gay rights this was to show
that people that chose to be
gay have the same rights as
everyone else and those
they are equal to everyone.
1996 the Green Party was
the first Federal party to
support gay rights and
marriages.
Minority rights on April 17th ,
1982 section 15 of the charter
15 gave equality rights
Canadians believe that it is
necessary for rights and
freedom in a free and
democratic society
Task 3:
You will examine ONE of these events in further detail and discuss how that oppressed group
was able to achieve rights within Canadian society.
Oppressed Group: Gay Rights in Canada
The green party in 1996 was the first to fully support the rights of gay marriage and gay rights.
The Green Party fully believed that everyone in Canada has the right and freedom from
discrimination they wanted to the people of Canada to live without the feeling of discrimination.
They made laws that people must follow and to prohibit discrimination.

Society:
Ancient

The rich
people in

Task 4:
Choose ONE ancient society to compare and contrast with Canada.
Gender Roles and

Women
Women in Canada are equal to
men and both have the same
rights
Women were “encouraged” to

They have the same rights as

The Big Question:
From your study of these societies, what stood out most for you as a similarity of between
Canada and your ancient society and what stood out as a difference?
What stood out for a difference from ancient China to Canada is how they treated people
and how it was a hard life if you weren’t born into the right family and how they distributed
the power threw kings and taking over places. The similarities are that they have some kind
for government that had power over the country and that had someone who had the most
power over the country to make decisions.
