Health Tip –National Breast Cancer Awareness Month FIVE TIPS: TO DECREASE YOUR RISK OF BREAST CANCER Eat a healthy diet. High fiber diets reduce hormone production and decrease cancer risk. Eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables and choosing whole grains will help you increase your fiber intake. Include cruciferous vegetables as they have cancer fighting properties. Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Make sure your fruit and vegetable intake includes a variety of colors. Know what to limit. Limit processed foods including processed meats. Limit red meat, especially when well done, and foods preserved with salt, such as deli meat and salami. Avoid alcohol. Alcohol may promote tumors that cause cancer; therefore, it is best to avoid it especially if you have risk factors for breast cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit it to no more than one drink per day. Exercise. Engaging in moderate exercise at least 150 minutes each week may reduce the risk of breast cancer and many other cancers. Breast feed. Having children has been shown to decrease risk of breast cancer. If you do have children, breast feed, as this has been shown to further reduce the risks.
