HEPATITIS B and C MARÍA FÉREZ, NEREA RIVEROS What is Hepatitis? Hepatitis is a disease which affects the liver. It can be caused by different viruses, methabolic disorders, genetic problems, and even obesity. Hepatitis can be: infectious, non infectious, chronic and acute. There are seven types of Hepatitis: A, B, C, D, E, G, X Hepatitis B It is the irritation and inflammation of the liver caused by Hepatitis B Virus (HBV). You can catch this virus by the blood and body fluids. Also sharing syringes. When you get infected for the first time, it is possible you don’t suffer any symptom, you can feel ill for a few days or weeks or you can feel very bad immediately. Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C virus. The hepatitis C virus is a bloodborne virus. It is most commonly transmitted through: sharing of injection equipment, the reuse or inadequate sterilization of medical equipment, the transfusion of unscreened blood and blood products. HCV can also be transmitted sexually and can be passed from an infected mother to her baby; however these modes of transmission are much less common. Approximately 700 000 people die each year from hepatitis C-related liver diseases. There is currently no vaccine for hepatitis C; however research in this area is ongoing.
