What is Hepatitis?
 Hepatitis is a disease which affects the liver.
 It can be caused by different viruses, methabolic disorders, genetic problems, and even
obesity.
 Hepatitis can be: infectious, non infectious, chronic and acute.
 There are seven types of Hepatitis: A, B, C, D, E, G, X
Hepatitis B
 It is the irritation and inflammation of the liver
caused by Hepatitis B Virus (HBV).
 You can catch this virus by the blood and body
fluids. Also sharing syringes.
 When you get infected for the first time, it is possible
you don’t suffer any symptom, you can feel ill for a
few days or weeks or you can feel very bad
immediately.
Hepatitis C
 Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C
virus.
 The hepatitis C virus is a bloodborne virus. It is most
commonly transmitted through: sharing of injection
equipment, the reuse or inadequate sterilization of
medical equipment, the transfusion of unscreened
blood and blood products.
 HCV can also be transmitted sexually and can be
passed from an infected mother to her baby; however
these modes of transmission are much less common.
 Approximately 700 000 people die each year from
hepatitis C-related liver diseases.
 There is currently no vaccine for hepatitis C; however
research in this area is ongoing.
Symptoms
 Fever
 Fatigue
 Decreased appetite
 Nausea
 Vomiting
 Abdominal pain
 Dark urine
 Grey-coloured faeces
 Joint pain
 Jaundice (yellowing of skin and the whites of the eyes).
Treatments
HEPATITIS B
HEPATITIS C
 Rest
 Therapy with interferon and ribavirin
 Cut down on alcohol and fats
 Antiviral drugs
 Some medicines (oral and by injection)
 Direct antiviral agents (DAA)
Prevention
HEPATITIS C

 Hand hygiene.
 Drink potable water only
 Provision of comprehensive harm-reduction
services to people who inject drugs
including sterile injecting equipment
 Use condoms in your sexual practices
 Make sure your tattoo and piercing
materials are correctly sterilised
 Do not share srynges
 Immunization with the hepatitis A and B
vaccines.
 Testing of donated blood for hepatitis B
and C
 Promotion of correct and consistent use of
condoms
 Immunization with the hepatitis A and B
vaccines.
