Brutus vs. Antony
Julius Caeser was born on July 12, 100 BC, and was murdered on march 15, 44 BC. Caeser was
part of the Roman military and was also a political leader. Caeser was one of the main people who was
involved in the transformation of the roman republic into the roman empire. In arrangement with
Pompey and Crassus, Caeser formed political alliances that led up to the “first triumvirate”. Caeser may
have ruled Rome, but his allies later turned against him. A group of men later assassinated Caeser in
hopes of bringing back the normal running of the republic, but the result was another Roman civil war.
Both Brutus and Anthony give very powerful speeches. Brutus is the first to go and tells the
crowd of the wrong doings of Caeser. During Brutus’ speech he pulled out the same dagger of which
Caeser had suffereth death. Brutus states “ I have the same dagger for myself when it shall please my
country to need my death” (Shakespeare 761) Brutus believed that by Caeser dying it saved Rome, and
he is also wiling to give his own life for Rome also. The audience shows they like the statement of Brutus
The people of Rome agree with Brutus, and feel that he should rule but Antony was yet to go and no
one thought they were going to hear what they heard.
Anthony gives a speech to the people of Rome, about how Caeser should not hath suffereth
death but he should still be among them. Anthony states that he is “ … a plain but blunt man that love
my friend.” It seems as the crowd has respect and feels sorrow for Anthony’s loss. They exclaim “
Methinks there is much reason in his sayings..” “if though consider rightly of the matter, Caeser has had
a great wrong doing.” The people of Rome agree with Anthony. They feel that the death of Caeser was
for the better of Rome and now feel that Brutus should suffer. After the speech which Antony gave the
people of Rome even threatened to burn down the home of Brutus. Antony won the speech and the
crowd was pleased. Antony got the power that he wanted and strived for he also later started a war.
Brutus gave a speech about the death of Caeser was for the good of Rome. Brutus was willing to
give his own life also for the sake of Rome. The crowdfelt that Brutus should not suffereth death. The
crowd exclaims “ live Brutus, live live” The crowd understands and likes the statements which Brutus
gave, but they felt that Anthony was a better ruler and appionted him to all power.
In the end the crowd was more pleased with the speech of Antony. Brutus gave a superior
speech but after Antony gave his the crowd turned on Brutus and felt that Antony should win. Brutus
offered his life, which the crowd felt should be done after Antony’s speech. But Antony talked the crowd
out of it and talked them into giving him the power that he desired.
Through the Power that Rome gave him, Anthony started to gain the legions of Gaul. A law was later
passed that found the assassins of caseser to be guilty. Anthony could no longer look to them for
support. Octavian, one of the main acomplices in casesers death, was later caught and exucted. This
new triumvirate was a joint dictatorship, which means the three main leaders had ultimate authority,
and the abiltiy to disregard traditions through military force. This triumvirate focused on obtaining funds
to stabalize their authority and eliminate political rebellion. Over the years the triumvirate remained
stable, and secured a spot with a common foe.
