Sample definitions: *Communism *Capitalism *Supply and Demand *Imperialism *Direct and Indirect Rule *Students will take down background notes and take part in a discussion whether Imperialism was good or bad for Africa and Europe and how the power struggle for colonies may lead to further conflicts. *Students will work on Imperialism Maps that demonstrate the extension of Imperialism by European nations (maps will cover both Africa and Asia) *Students will view the biography of Mahatma Gandhi (accompanied with a viewing guide) and will take part in a discussion on whether Gandhi was effective using non-violence and was his pilgrimage worth the sacrifice of his family. Also, the class will discuss why they became rigid as a nation on certain positions and were not willing to compromise. "Western Front" Viewing Guide Have each student, in two to four paragraphs, explain why they feel communism is better, worse or both than capitalism/democracies and why individuals gravitated to the communist message. *Quiz over Imperialism/W.W.I/Russian Revolution. *Give students background notes on what lead to the start of W.W.I while referring to the simulation game, helping to tie together the notes with a real experience. *Show the students "All Quiet on the Western Front" (accompanied by a viewing guide). The film shows the horror of trench warfare as well as the German soldiers perspective of the war. Discuss the viewing guide and how the German perspective of the war changes as the war drags on. *Give students background notes on some of the actual battles of W.W.I and why the casualty rate was so high, the impact of the flu epidemic that hit the world during the war and why the Germans were destined to lose. *Grade the Russian Revolution worksheet in class while discussing why communism is so attractive during this time in history. *View Biography on Joseph Stalin and his rise to power during the Russian Revolution.
