Renaissance: Means “rebirth” and was a period of time in Western Europe from around 1300 – 1600. A new Worldwide view evolved: The disorder and disunity of the Middle Ages led people to a new love of classical writings of Greece and Rome. New attitudes toward culture and learning from spiritual to humanist. Scholarship changed from spiritual writing to humanism and individual achievement. WHERE WAS THE RENAISSANCE? The Renaissance started in Florence Italy. Trade with the Muslim world across the Mediterranean Sea helped banking, manufacturing and merchants to make more money Trade provided wealth that fueled the Renaissance. The revival of trade in Europe helped bring an end to the Middle Ages & gave rise to the Renaissance WHERE WAS THE RENAISSANCE? The rise of cities brought artists together which led to new techniques & styles of art Wealthy bankers & merchants wanted to show off their new status by commissioning art WHERE WAS THE RENAISSANCE? The House of the Medici - in Florence were the most powerful family in Italy The House of Sforza - in Milan Founded by Cosimo Medici in 1434, they were bankers that invested and loaned money to governments all over Europe – including to the pope.
