The Parts of Speech: Study Guide
Noun - A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea.
Examples: pencil, girl, supermarket, happiness
Sentence: The boy is from China.
Pronoun - A pronoun replaces a noun or noun phrase that is understood from context.
Examples: he, she, it, they, we, us
Sentence: We are happy about the new house.
Adjective - An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
Examples: silly, crazy, wonderful, blue
Sentence: The painting is colorful and interesting.
Verb - Verbs are action or state of being words that tell what nouns or pronouns do.
Examples: jump, live, to fly, to run, to be, is, was
Sentence: She wants to run.
Adverb - An adverb tells how or when a verb happens. It can also give more information about
an adjective or adverb. It often ends in "ly".
Examples: carefully, easily, barely, now
Sentence: Suddenly we realized we needed to leave.
Preposition - A preposition describes the relationship between a noun and another noun (or verb
or adverb).
Examples: to, under, for, at, by, from
Sentence: The cat is under the blanket.
Conjunction - A conjunction joins together words, phrases, or clauses.
Examples: and, or, but, since, because
Sentence: I wanted to go, but I didn’t have enough money.
Interjection - An interjection is an outcry or sudden utterance. It usually starts a sentence.
Examples: Wow, Gosh, Yes
Sentence: No! I can’t believe it!
GRAMMAR RAP
A noun is a person, place, or thing
Like a guy or a bus or a playground swing.
A pronoun is a sub for nouns,
Like I and we, him and he, she, her, it, them, they, you, me!
An adjective describes those two,
Which one, what kind, how many, whose?
A verb is an action or being kind of thing,
Eat, walk, were, be, shout and sing.
An adverb gives more information,
How? When? Where? Why? That’s this part’s definition.
Prepositions pull nouns into a phrase:
In, on, under, with, around, above, hey!
Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses,
If, also, but, since, for, as, because.
And interjections, Yes! Wow! Yo!
Strong feelings are what they let you know.
