Science Chapter A1 Study Guide Living Things Vocabulary Words Arthropod Animal that has legs with several joints Cell Basic Unit of structure of all living things Embryo Part of a seed that contains a small plant Fruit Part of a flowering plant that protects the seeds Fungi Living things, such as mushrooms and mildew, that do not produce their own food Hyphae Threadlike parts of a mushroom that help it reproduce Invertebrate Animal without a backbone Microorganism Tiny organism made up of one cell Mold Cottony fungus that can grow on bread Spore Cell that can grow into a new fungus Vertebrate Animal with a backbone Be able to label the following parts of a plant cell: cell wall, cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, and chloroplast Scientists use a microscope to observe a microorganism. A worm is an example of an invertebrate. Plants need chlorophyll to produce food in their leaves. People do not need chlorophyll because they do not produce food in their bodies. They get food from plants and animals. The seeds of a fruit bearing plant form in the plant’s flowers. Yeast is a type of fungus. A squirrel is not an arthropod because arthropods are invertebrates and a squirrel is a vertebrate. A snail is an invertebrate. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that plants need to make food. A mushroom and a dandelion are alike because they are both living things. Both need food to survive. Both are unable to move around to different locations. They are different because the mushroom is a fungus, while the dandelion is a plant. The mushroom produces spores, while the dandelion produces seeds. The mushroom absorbs food from other living things and dead things, wile the dandelion produces its own food. Some examples of arthropods are ants, crabs, and spiders.
