Please complete this assignment prior to attending your course (and bring it with you).
Homeostasis is the condition in which the body’s internal environment remains relatively constant
(within limits)
An organism is said to be in Homeostasis when it’s internal environment:
(1) Contains the optimum concentration of gases, nutrients, ions and water
(2) Has an optimal temperature
(3) Has optimal pressure for the health of the cells
The eleven systems of the body are Homeostatic (regulating) devices that bring the internal
environment into balance.
For each of the following systems – state in a paragraph each of the primary function, major organs and
homeostatic role of the system.
Structures involved assisting in Homeostasis; the first system has been completed as an example.
EXAMPLE: The Respiratory System
Anatomy & Physiology
Primary Function:
The respiratory system exchanges gases between the atmosphere and the blood. It
supplies oxygen taken from the air and assists to exchange it over to circulating
blood (inspiration). It removes carbon dioxide (a by-product of metabolism from the
blood) and eliminates it into the atmosphere through expiration.
Major Organs:
Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs.
Homeostatic Role:
Cells use more oxygen and produce more carbon dioxide when they are very
active. During activity, the respiratory system works faster to provide oxygen
and prevents excessive carbon dioxide accumulating.
