Name: ______________________________ 6B- _____ Date: ________________________ Grammar: Nouns 4 — Prepositions, Case, Proper Nouns, & Plurals Case: Subjective- These nouns do the action / verb. Ex: The boy threw the ball to Sue. Objective- These nouns do one of two things: receive the action of the verb. Ex: The boy threw the ball to Sue. appear at end of prep. phrase. Ex: The boy threw the ball (to Sue.) Possessive: These nouns show possession, or ownership. Ex: Tom’s team won. Method to determine case: 1. Verb: Find the verb, or action word. Sentences may have multiple verbs. 2. Possessive: Locate apostrophes. Nouns with apostrophes are probably possessive. Once you locate a noun with an apostrophe, check that it owns, possesses or “has,” something else. This means it’s possessive. There may be more than one possessive noun in a sentence, but sentences don’t have to have possessive nouns. Ex: Joe’s hat is yellow. (Joe’s is possessive; Joe owns a yellow hat.) 3. Subjective: Ask who / what did the verb (action.) This noun is subjective. Sentences must have at least one subjective noun, or subject. A sentence may have more than one subject. Ex: The cat played with yarn. (Question: Who or what played? Answer: the cat.) 4. Objective: Take subject + verb, and then ask who / what. The answer is an objective noun, or an object. This is called a direct object. There may be more than one direct object in a sentence, but sentences don’t have to have direct objects. Ex: The batter hit the ball. (Question: The batter hit who or what? Answer: the ball.) 5. Objective: All other nouns probably appear at the end of a prepositional phrase (descriptive phrase). A prepositional phrase starts with a preposition and ends with a noun, which is called the object of the preposition. The phrase (group of words) describes a word outside the phrase. There may be more than one object of the preposition, but sentences don’t have to have an object of the prepostion. Ex: Little Red Riding Hood went over the river and through the woods to her grandmother’s house. (Over the river, through the woods, and to her grandmother’s house = prepositional phrases; all three phrases describe the verb went.) (over) I. Directions: USE PENCIL.
