The Intellectual and Artistic Renaissance Test Two • Describe Humanism. • How did Humanism start and evolve? • Name three (3) important people in the history of Humanism. • Is Humanism a philosophy of today? Explain. The Intellectual • The key intellectual movement of the Renaissance was Humanism. • It was based upon the study of the classic works of the Greeks and Romans. • Humanists studied grammar, rhetoric, poetry, moral philosophy and history. • Today we call these the Humanities. • Petrarch of the 1400th century became the father of the Renaissance Humanism. • Petrarch spend his life searching and translating the old Greek and Roman writings. • He stressed the works of Roman poets Cicero and Virgil. • He stressed life was for study and not family. • But in Florence, humanists took a new interest in civic life. • Study should be to serve the state. • Humanists used classic Latin language and it became the official language for scholars, lawyers and theologians. • A few writers wrote in the vernacular French and German like Dante and Chaucer. • Dante wrote the Divine Comedy which describes heaven, hell and purgatory. • Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales which told 26 stories set at the tomb of Thomas Beckett at Canterbury, England. • Humanists believed education could change human beings for the good. • They wrote textbooks and created schools. • They believed only through education that people could develop into their full potential. • Only through education could wisdom and virtue be obtained. • Rhetoric (logos, pathos, and ethnos) was needed to convince others to become enlightened through education. • Like the Greeks, humanists stressed physical fitness. • Skills like javelin throwing, archery, dancing, running, wrestling, hunting and swimming were taught. • Almost all the Renaissance students were male. The Artistic Renaissance in Italy • All Renaissance artists sought to imitate nature in their works. • Humans became the center and measure of all things. • Frescos became the major paint media. • Frescos developed to display depth, style, laws of perspective and light. • Reality became the goal. • Sculptors like Donatello studied human anatomy • Architecture copied the ancient Greek and Roman buildings. • Some artists used many different medias, like Michelangelo, Raphael, and da Vinci. • Raphael became famous for his paintings of the Madonna. • Michelangelo for his fresco in the Sistine Chapel • Da Vinci for his oil paintings (Mona Lisa) Finis
