SISCOG wins north American Innovation Award
SISCOG, Sistemas Cognitivos was awarded with the “Innovative Application Award 2003”. Given by the
American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), the largest and most prestigious Artificial
Intelligence society in the world, this is the second time SISCOG wins this award, enhancing the
innovative characteristic of the systems developed by SISCOG and its applications to real life.
The award now received distinguishes the planning and management system developed for the
Norwegian Railways.
This system is composed by a central component, located in Oslo, which is responsible for the planning of
about 4.000 drivers and guards. The plans originated centrally are spread out, through a computer
network covering all Norway, to staff management centres, located in Oslo, Trondheim, Hamar,
Drammen, Bergen, Kristiansand and Stavanger. At these centres, another component, also developed by
SISCOG, makes the allocation of the received plans to the individual workers, having in consideration its
qualifications, the work load that already was affected to them in the last months, and the validation of all
labour rules.
On a daily basis, the system receives information about how the operation is running, supplying the
planner with a decision support over the changes that must be taken in place, in order to minimize the
influences of unexpected occurrences. The system also registers the work that was really performed by
each worker, supplying to the company's salary system all the information about the effective working
hours and its supplements.
PRESS RELEASE
PRESS RELEASE
SISCOG acts in the international market since 1993, having currently systems in The Netherlands, United
Kingdom, Norway, Denmark and Finland. The list of SISCOG customers includes the following
companies (by alphabetical order): BRISA (Motorways from Portugal), CP (Portuguese Railways), DSB
(Danish Railways), Metropolitano de Lisboa (Lisbon subway), NS (Dutch Railways), NSB (Norwegian
Railways), Stansted Express (from UK), S-tog (Suburban trains from Copenhagen), VR (Finnish
Railways) and WAGN-West Anglia Great Northern Railway (from UK). Currently, about 20.000 people in
several European countries have its daily work planned and managed by systems developed by SISCOG.
In the last the two years, the invoicing percentage of SISCOG coming from abroad has gone up to around
90% of the global invoicing of the company, which if points out (in 2002) close to two million Euros.
Having a considerable European implantation, and being, at the international level, one of the key
suppliers of crew and staff planning and management systems for railway companies, SISCOG started,
since the beginning of last year, to widen its market niche: SISCOG is developing a system to plan and
manage the tollbooth operators of BRISA. With this new system SISCOG will approach the planning of
fixed resources, that is, of people not moving in space. SISCOG hopes that its products start to be
considered by all companies dealing with the concept of roster (rotation of duties), such as hospitals, great
supermarkets and security forces. SISCOG leaders are confident that this will be another success story in
a near future.

PRESS RELEASE
This award strengthens the international recognition of the work developed by SISCOG. SISCOG had
already received this award in 1997 regarding the planning and management system developed for Dutch
Railways. With this year's award, the American Association for Artificial Intelligence confirms that
SISCOG integrated approach to a planning and management system is not only innovative, but also
produces results of practical applicability.
