Name: Date: Subject: Energy Flow in Living Systems Objectives Objective 1: ASWBAT to describe the role of photosynthesis and cellular respiration in how energy flows from sunlight to ATP. Objective 2: ASWBAT to describe what an autotroph and a heterotroph are. On a scale of 1 – 3 how well you can do on this objective now. (1 – Not at all 2 – I know it a little bit 3 – I know it very well) Objective: 1 Objective: 2 1 1 2 2 3 3 Key Vocabulary Words On a scale of 1 – 3 how well you know the vocabulary words below. What does a chloroplast do? Answer: 2. What does a mitochondrion do? Answer: 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 Energy and Living Things Do you know that you are solar powered? In fact most of the energy that life on Earth uses comes originally from the sun. The sun energy is stored in an organic molecules we call sugar. We call this process photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria make sugar using sunlight energy. The sugar stores the sunlight energy until it is broken down into energy the cells can use called ATP. We call this process cellular respiration. Cellular respiration is the process that a cell uses to break down sugar and create ATP to be used as energy. ATP is the energy that all living things use to perform all of the cellular functions that keep them alive. Energy flows from sunlight to ATP in two steps. 1. Sunlight energy is converted to sugar during photosynthesis. 2. The sugar is turned into ATP during cellular respiration. Describe the steps of how sunlight energy is converted from sunlight to ATP. Make sure to include the process that is happening. Step 1: Step 2: 2. What is ATP? Answer: Autotrophs Because of photosynthesis, algae, plants, and some bacteria can make their own food. We call them autotrophs. Autotrophs are organisms that can make their own food. They are also called producers because they produce or make food. Heterotrophs All other living things need to gather their food. We call them heterotrophs. Heterotrophs are organisms have to get their food by eating other organisms. They are also called consumers because they consume or eat their food. 1. What is an autotroph? Answer: 2. What else are they called? Why? Answer: 3. What is a heterotroph? Answer: 4. What are else are they called? Why? Answer: Action! – Lets eat some sugar and exercise! Quiz Directions: Answer the following questions to see if you met the objectives. 1. Describe the steps of how sunlight energy is converted from sunlight to ATP. Make sure to include the process that is happening. Step 1: Step 2: 2. What is ATP? Answer: 3. What is an autotroph? Answer: 4. What else are autotrophs called? Why? Answer: 5. What is a heterotroph? Answer: 6. What else are heterotrophs called? Why? Answer:
