GCSE Chemistry Topic – The Atom
Aims
Identify each of the three subatomic particles
– protons, neutrons and electrons
Recall location, mass and charge of each of
the three subatomic particles
Identify the numbers of protons, neutrons and
electrons for each element in the periodic table
up to atomic number 20 – calcium

in a line
0.8 cm long
Atoms – too small to be
seen by any microscope
using light – EVER
(atoms are smaller than
the wavelength of light)
Size of Venus compared to man
is like
Size of man compared to C atom

Nucleus = pea
Atom = football pitch
This means an atom is mostly empty space……
If you take all the empty space out of the atom you are
left with very little.
For example if you take all the space out of all the
atoms in Barrack Obama’s body he would be smaller
than a grain of sand!
