Gamification
for Learning
Dr Deborah Bunker
Topic
Chemistry Subject Specialist Resource
Aims
 This resource has been developed to support learners to develop their Chemistry
subject specialist knowledge whilst having a little fun, gaming for learning. The
resource can be used to introduce an element of competition between individuals
and/or groups which learners appear to enjoy.
Level
Level 2, Level 3
Method
PowerPoint Presentation. This can be used as an Ice Breaker activity to assess prior
knowledge. A the start of a lesson provide the Connect to previous sessions learning,
providing a fun interactive activity whilst providing checks on learning. This can also be
used at the end of a lesson to assess that learning had taken place. INSTRUCTIONS on
how to use this resource are in the Teacher/Lecturer notes page (see below)

Neutral particles
that are formed
when pairs of
electrons are shared
by atoms
What are
molecules?
charged particle
whose charge
results from the gain
or loss of one or
more electrons
What is an ion?
The type of bond
formed when
positively charged
ions attract
negatively charged
ions
What is an ionic
bond?
An unequally shared
pair of electrons
What is a polar
covalent bond?
A dative covalent
bond
What do we call a
covalent bond
where both of the
shared pair of
electrons come from
the same atom?
The positively
charged particle in
the nucleus of an
atom
What is the proton?
The uncharged
particle in the
nucleus of an atom
What is the
Neutron?
An electron
What do you call a particle
with a 1- charge and a mass
of approximately 1/2000
amu?
A p-block element
What do we call an
element whose
outermost electron
is in a p sub-shell?
The name of the
principle by which
electrons fill subshells by occupying
the lowest energy
sub-shell first
What is the Aufbau
principle?
The number of
electrons in an atom
with an atomic
number of 5
What is 5?
The number of
neutrons in the
nucleus of an
element with an
atomic mass of 11,
and an atomic
number of 5
What is 6?
The relative atomic
atomic mass of an
element whose
atoms have 30
protons and an
average of 35.39
neutrons in its
nucleus
What is 65.39?
The average number
of neutrons in the
nucleus of an atom
that has an atomic
number of 28
30.69
Which element has a
relative atomic mass
of 222.017
Radon
It has an atomic
number of 1, an
atomic mass of
1.00794 and its
symbol is H
What is Hydrogen?
It has an atomic
number of 2, an
atomic number of
4.002602, and its
symbol is He
What is Helium?
Its symbol is Au
