“Surely there would be no need of eloquent appeals on behalf of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary if you could look into

2012 Annual Report of
The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
EXCELLENCE IN
SPECIALTY CARE
Sorrell M. Mathes, Chairman
D. McWilliams Kessler, President and CEO
Maintaining Medical Excellence
Expanding Community Satellites
■ Named once again by US News & World Report as one of “America’s Best
Hospitals,” as well as one of the top hospitals in the New York Metro area.
■ Highlighted in Castle Connolly “Top Doctors” Guide and New York
magazine’s “Best Doctors.”
■ Maintained prestigious Magnet Recognition status for NYEE nursing staff.
■ Successfully passed Joint Commission Triennial Survey.
■ Cited by American Association of Eye & Ear Centers of Excellence
(AAEECE) benchmarking studies, showing that NYEE provides
cost-effective quality patient care.
■ NYEE Eye Trauma Center continued to treat more emergency eye cases
than any other facility in New York, serving with excellence as the Eye
Injury Registry of the State of New York and member of the U.S. Eye
Injury Registry.
■ Activated vigorous plan for creation of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC)
including construction of a joint venture between NYEE, surgeons and an
ASC development and management firm, to open 2013 in Bayside Queens.
Filed Certificate of Need (CON) applications for two NYEE start-up, joint
venture ASCs, one in the Bronx and one in Manhattan. Also planned two
other ASCs for Brooklyn and Queens. Syndications are nearly completed
for both and CONs will be filed first quarter 2013. Several other ASC
initiatives are in developmental stages in other geographic markets.
■ Initiated planning for four new NYEE physician satellite offices, slated to
open in 2013. Locations include Bay Ridge, Upper West Side, Bayside
and Astoria.
Intensifying Research Capabilities
■ Continued growth across all core specialties of full-time faculty, employed
physicians and voluntary attendings, adding six full time faculty, six
employed physicians and 48 voluntary attendings.
■ Following a national search, named new Chair of our Department of
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery; and initiated national search for
new Chair of Ophthalmology.
■ Increased number of nationally certified nurses.
■ Established The Clinical Research Consortium at NYEE in conjunction with
Bausch & Lomb, to provide a platform for introduction of new
pharmaceuticals into clinical development and encourage NYEE
Ophthalmologists to participate in sponsored research opportunities.
■ Gained $1M funding support for our investigation into the causes and
potential treatment for exfoliation syndrome, a leading cause of glaucoma,
and six-figure support for the Ocular Imaging Project we are conducting
in association with the Eye Institute of the Medical College of Wisconsin.
■ Received prestigious selection as clinical trial site by Diabetic Retinopathy
Clinical Research Network of the National Eye Institute to study growing
epidemic of diabetes-related eye disease.
Growing Patient Care Services and
Revenues
Advancing Physician Teaching
and Education
■ Maintained strong surgical volume with 31,132 cases, including laser.
(If not for the impact of super storm “Sandy,” 2011 total of 31,544 cases
would have been surpassed.) Also served 126,202 total out-patient clinic
visits, including a large number of New York’s under-insured from diverse
communities across the five boroughs.
■ Furthered positive trend of last four years by enhancing New York Eye and Ear’s
financial stability-- increasing revenue growth by 59% and cash flow by $18
million, maximizing reimbursement, and reducing outstanding receivables.
■ Teamed with Partners in Care to enhance patient experience by providing
escort service to ensure patients arrive home safely post-surgery.
■ NYEE internationally-recognized physician training programs graduated
25 Residents and Fellows in Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and
Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery.
■ Continued tradition of training one of the largest numbers of international
eye fellows of any medical center in the world.
■ NYEE’s Institute for Continuing Medical Education accredited and
conducted 34 continuing medical education activities, nearly three times
as many as 2011.
■ Took leading role in a variety of international medical conferences,
including 15th annual University of Sao Paulo Ophthalmology Congress,
with 3000 attendees.
Enhancing Outstanding Medical
Staff
Investing in our Primary Facilities
■ Opened new 3,600 square feet Perianesthesia Care Unit (PACU) on
time/on budget and continued next phase of surgical suite initiative with
anticipated opening of two new ORs in 2013.
■ Renovated private Delafield Rooms, upgraded 7th Floor, Ambulatory
Clinics, and 5th Floor Waiting area, and finalized plans for major
renovation of the 9th floor Pediatrics Unit.
■ Completed purchase and installation of newest state-of-the art ophthalmology
ceiling-mounted microscopes in all 12 ophthalmology operating rooms,
and installed BSL-2 laminar flow hood in Microbiology for use in primary
inoculation and subculture of samples.
■ Initiated hospital-wide computer system upgrade.
Raising Awareness about Eye and
Ear Health
■ Conducted National Public Service Campaign focusing on issue of hearing loss
featuring entertainers Chris Botti and Sting in a Public Service Announcement
that aired 3,000 times on TV stations across country, viewed 6,500 times on
YouTube, and played in 2,000 NYC taxi cabs. PSA also generated 5,000
“likes” on Facebook; and extensive media coverage. The campaign also
launched NYEE’s new educational website and Facebook presence dedicated
to hearing loss.
■ Conducted multiple on-site screenings and participation in health and wellness
days at major corporate entities to develop and cultivate new and existing
referral sources for our Faculty Practice Plans (FPPs) and satellite offices.
■ Enhanced NYEE partnership with The Recording Academy/MusiCares, providing
4th annual free voice screening on World Voice Day, and enhancing our Voice
& Swallowing Institute as preferred provider of vocal health services to
MusiCares members.
■ Launched the Continuum Otolaryngology service line joint marketing initiatives
among NYEE, BIMC and SLR, including development of a website along with
disease-specific patient interest videos featuring CHP Otolaryngologists on
YouTube.
Easing Access for Patients and
Referrers
■ Substantially increased the quantity and quality of physician referrals through
licensing of ZocDoc, offering online appointments and 24/7 ability for
prospective patients to search for physicians by different parameters
including type and level of insurance participation.
■ Continued radio/banner advertising on WCBS-AM, WINS and cbslocal.com
for the Ear Institute, Eye and ENT services. Initial campaign realized more
than 1,600 click-throughs and increased online appointments by 78%,
representing an increase from 763 to 1,357 appointments per month.
■ Organized more than 50,000 pieces of direct mail and other advertising for
the FPPs and satellite network targeting over a dozen specialties and primary
care physicians in the tri-state area.
Enhancing Global Alliances
■ Hosted visits, lectures, courses, observerships and Grand Rounds by foreign
medical experts, including individuals and delegations from Saudi Arabia and
Italy, and from Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, our “sister institution” in Taiwan.
■ Conducted medical missions to underserved countries, including annual
missions to Dominican Republic and Zambia. Also conducted a mission to
Kenya to perform thyroid surgery and another to Georgia on the Black Sea
on behalf of children with facial deformities.
■ In aftermath of super storm Sandy, while our neighbor institution NYU-Langone
Medical Center remained closed, we welcomed NYU surgeons into our
operating rooms to accommodate urgent surgical needs of patients.
Widening Culture of Philanthropy
■ Enhanced NYEE philanthropic outreach to achieve strong fundraising year,
increasing number of donors by nearly fifty percent.
■ Grew NYEE endowed fund program, including expansion of The James Cox
Chambers Glaucoma Research & Education Fund.
■ Broadened philanthropic support for Surgical Suite Initiative among (77)
Founding Benefactors.
