Coordinated Care
and Communication
The BWH Ophthalmology team excels at providing
a full spectrum of integrated patient care, from
annual eye exams and continued ophthalmology
care, to subspecialty care. We use the Longitudinal
Medical Record (LMR) for all patient visits. This is
an integrated system of communication and medical
record sharing among the majority of Harvard
Medical School’s network of 17 hospitals and
affiliates. In addition to Brigham & Women’s
Hospital and its affiliates, these institutions include
other members of the Partners Healthcare network.
This secure system of shared medical information
facilitates communication among referring
physicians and Mass. Eye and Ear’s consulting
ophthalmologists. The network allows immediate
and accurate medical information, thus supporting
efficient medical decision-making at every clinical
level. It enables our physicians to instantly
communicate with our other in-house subspecialists, affording seamless and rapid access to
some of the best ophthalmic resources.
Our physicians are highly-regarded and extremely
well-trained. Each member of our team oversees
Harvard Medical School ophthalmologists in training,
and has completed post-residency subspecialty training
to further hone his or her clinical skills.

Allies in Care: Comprehensive,
Integrated Services
The Ophthalmology Service for BWH is a resource for
all disorders of the eye. Our services include routine eye
care as well as comprehensive evaluation and treatment
of complex and systemic disorders such as diabetes,
glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataract, and retinal
detachment. As of July 2009, our team has been
providing outstanding care for patients admitted to
BWH emergency department and staffing the inpatient
consultation service at BWH. In caring for our patients,
we strive to create working partnerships with them, with
their referring physicians, and with the colleagues who
join us in providing their care. We understand and value
the role of each member of the patient care team.
Our unique Eye Emergency Department is the
only specialized facility of its kind in New England.
It operates 24/7 and is dedicated to ensuring that
patients receive all necessary treatment. Patients
requiring further sub-specialty care are referred
directly to our in-house subspecialists. Trauma
care at Mass Eye and Ear and BWH emergency
departments is coordinated by the Director of
Mass Eye and Ear’s Trauma Service and enjoys the
support of over 60 physicians specializing in
ophthalmic care.
