Eye and Ear is a unique specialty hospital, with world-renowned experts and diagnostic and treatment capabilities unmatched in the region. Our Radiology Service has a dedicated MRI/CT imaging suite for eye, ear, head and neck diseases. We maintain a full laboratory and expert ocular pathology service. We utilize the most technologically advanced ophthalmic imaging and laser treatment equipment. Our imaging results are stored electronically in a secure, central repository that is accessible within the group for consultation and coordinated care. We use the Longitudinal Medical Record (LMR) for all patient visits. This is an integrated system of communication and medical record sharing among the majority of Harvard Medical School’s network of 17 hospitals and affiliates. In addition to Brigham & Women’s Hospital and its affiliates, these institutions include other members of the Partners Healthcare network. This secure system of shared medical information facilitates communication among referring physicians and Mass. Eye and Ear’s consulting ophthalmologists. The network allows immediate and accurate medical information, thus supporting efficient medical decision-making at every clinical level. It enables our physicians to instantly communicate with our other in-house subspecialists, affording seamless and rapid access to some of the best ophthalmic resources. Our physicians are highly-regarded and extremely well-trained. Each member of our team oversees Harvard Medical School ophthalmologists in training, and has completed post-residency subspecialty training to further hone his or her clinical skills. Our services include routine eye care as well as comprehensive evaluation and treatment of complex and systemic disorders such as diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataract, and retinal detachment. As of July 2009, our team has been providing outstanding care for patients admitted to BWH emergency department and staffing the inpatient consultation service at BWH. In caring for our patients, we strive to create working partnerships with them, with their referring physicians, and with the colleagues who join us in providing their care. We understand and value the role of each member of the patient care team. Our unique Eye Emergency Department is the only specialized facility of its kind in New England. It operates 24/7 and is dedicated to ensuring that patients receive all necessary treatment. Patients requiring further sub-specialty care are referred directly to our in-house subspecialists. Trauma care at Mass Eye and Ear and BWH emergency departments is coordinated by the Director of Mass Eye and Ear’s Trauma Service and enjoys the support of over 60 physicians specializing in ophthalmic care.
