Art of the Renaissance
During the Renaissance many artists created amazing works of art. There were many innovations in technique which
brought more realism to paintings. The ideals of humanism, individualism, secularism, and classicism were reflected in
many pieces of art. Religious themes had dominated artwork of the Middle Ages and it continued to be a subject of
Renaissance artists, although to a lesser extent.
Read the artist’s biography section and explore their paintings. Each painting is accompanied by some type of
explanation or analysis. Complete the chart for each artist.

Terms:
1. chiarrusco -a technique of painting or drawing using light and shade to achieve a three-dimensional quality
2. tempera - a technique of painting in which an emulsion consisting of water and pure egg yolk or a mixture of
egg and oil is used as a binder or medium, characterized by its lean film-forming properties and rapid drying
rate
3. Perspective- Perspective creates an illusion of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional picture surface. Objects in
the background appear smaller than those in the foreground.
