Greek God and Goddess Monologue Assignment Sheet
Your Greek mythology project is to take on the role of one of the Greek gods or goddesses. Robert
Graves’s chapter, “The Palace of Olympus,” will introduce these characters to you, but you will be
responsible for additional research in order to complete this assignment. Our first task is to assign each
of you a god or goddess. The Olympians are: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hephaestus, Ares, Apollo,
Hermes, Demeter, Athene, Aprodite, Artemis, Hestia, and may also include Dionysus and Hades.
All of these gods and goddesses will be presented once; some will be presented twice. We will draw
names out of hats. If you and a classmate would like, you can trade.
The presentation of your monologue should be mapped out on four note cards and include the following:
Card 1. Tell what you are god or goddess of and tell why you are important to the Greek people.
Card 2. Relate one story from your life.
Card 3. Tell about your family. Who are your parents, siblings, or children? Are they gods and
goddesses? What are your relationships like? The Olympians are all part of a quarrelsome, loud, and
poorly mannered family. Give us some of the dirt.
Card 4. Tell about your impact on modern culture. Is your name used at all in modern culture? For what
purposes? (As a name of a company or a restaurant? As a logo? Etc.) Does your story have any current
impact on culture? Has your story got a modern retelling? Tell why you are such a big deal and why you
should be remembered today. Give us some reasons you should be considered more important than all
of the other Olympians. Go to the world wide web for this information.
You must also:
5. Include one prop that is suitable to your character.
6. Last for at least two minutes, but no more than four minutes. Practice your monologue at least five
times.
Graphic Representation: In addition to your monologue, you must bring in a drawing or illustration of
your god or goddess to add to our family tree bulletin board (graphic representation). Your picture must
be mounted on the piece of construction paper that you will receive today. This graphic must include the
information found on your god’s “trading card.”
