Chapter 6 Lesson 1, Earth and It’s Neighbors
Objectives
 Explore the orbit of a planet around the Sun.
 Describe the effect of gravity between objects in the solar system.
 Identify the effects of the Sun on Earth.
 Compare the Moon’s surface to Earth’s.
What holds Saturn, and all the planets, near the Sun?
What keeps each planet on it’s path?
Vocabulary:
Solar system
Planet
Gravity
Inertia
Lithosphere
Crust
Hydrosphere
Atmosphere
Constellation
MAIN IDEA – The solar system consists of nine planets, many moons, and other bodies orbiting the
Sun.
What is the Solar System?
Does sunlight reflect off the whole planet at once?
No.
Which part of the planter reflects light?
The part turned toward the Sun.
What keeps the Planets in Orbit?
Gravity
How do gravity and inertia keep a planet in orbit?
Gravity is an attraction that pulls a planet toward the Sun. Inertia is the tendency of a moving object to
keep moving in a straight line. Combined, these forces make the planet travel in a curved path around
the Sun.
What is a day?
A day is the amount of time it takes a planet to complete one spin.
How does the rate of rotation affect the length of the day?
A day is defined as one rotation of the planet. A planet with a longer day would turn at a slower rate.
What causes earth’s seasons?
Why is it summer in the Southern Hemisphere when it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere?
At that time of year, more direct light shines on the Southern Hemisphere because it is tilted toward the
Sun. The North end of Earth’s axis points away from the Sun.
THINK: How do the season in the United States compare with those in Australia?
What is planet earth like?
Lithosphere (crust)
Hydrosphere
Atmosphere
What is the Moon like? What are conditions like there?
The moon has no atmosphere or hydrosphere. Temperatures vary greatly. It has a rocky surface with
dark maria and craters.
THINK: Why did astronauts have to wear helmets and air tanks on the surface of the Moon?
What are Constellations?
