First, I introduce the lesson by asking, “What are all the functions or
parts of a sentence?” We will name a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and
a pronoun. Then we will go over each individual word and give the
definition.
After we figured out the definition, I will have the students give an
example of each function. We will name all the examples the students
could think of until everyone has an opportunity to think of one.
Next, we will sing the song “Mary had a little Lamb” to get the students
familiar with the tune of the song.
After singing the normal version, I will tell the students, “Now, we are
going to change the lyrics to the song to help us remember the functions
of a sentence. Let’s first look through the song and read the first line.”
After reading each paragraph’s line, I will demonstrate how the song
goes and the second time the students will join me. Then I will say,
“This song will help you remember all the functions of a sentence,
when you get stuck or cannot remember what an adverb is, sing the
song to remember.”
