ACADEMIC TECHNICIAN CAREER BAND
This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this
classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and
qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.
8031 ACADEMIC TECHNICIAN I - NON-EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for performing mechanical and electrical layout, construction,
modification, testing, adjustment, calibration, and preventive maintenance on simple and complex electronic
equipment for use in scientific research or instruction. Designs AC and DC circuits, such as power supplies and
modifications of standard circuits. Originates, modifies, assembles, and maintains complex schematic and wiring
diagrams. Uses various testing devices to locate trouble and to evaluate circuit voltages and resistances.
Performs demonstrations for faculty and students on proper operation of equipment. Purchases supplies and
parts. Responsible for asset inventory. Performs safety inspections and coordinates chemical waste disposal.
Duties and tasks are frequently non-routine. Resolves most questions, including some where only limited
standardization exists. Refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
Complexity: Applies both basic and some intermediate skills that require general working knowledge of
function/specialization.
Supervision Received: Receives moderate to limited supervision working from objectives set by supervisor.
Employee organizes and carries out most assignments in accordance with standard practices, instructions or
previous training. Employee handles some unusual situations independently.
Supervision Given: May function in a lead capacity over staff employees by assigning, scheduling and
monitoring work.
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s Degree in related field and two years of related experience; or any
equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are
required:
 Working knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and other devices
 Working knowledge of electricity, including concepts of voltage, current, resistance, power, Ohm’s
Law, and electrical units in general
 Working knowledge of linear and digital circuits
 Working Knowledge of alternating-current phenomena, including AC impedance and resonance
 Working knowledge of the properties and uses of electronic components, including resistors,
capacitators, inductances, transformers, vacuum tubes, and transistors
 Ability to design, trouble-shoot and maintain complex equipment
 Ability to operate standard tools and equipment
 Manual dexterity
 Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
8032 ACADEMIC TECHNICIAN II - NON-EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for installing, inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, modifying,
designing, and fabricating instruments and equipment used for scientific experiments. Performs demonstrations
for faculty and students on proper operation of equipment. Purchases supplies and parts. Responsible for asset

inventory. Performs safety inspections and coordinates chemical waste disposal. Duties and tasks are

• Ability to operate standard tools and equipment
• Manual dexterity
• Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
8033 ACADEMIC TECHNICIAN III - NON-EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for tuning, regulating, repairing, refurbishing, and rebuilding musical
instruments. Builds scientific glassware used for experiments (chemistry). Highly specialized skill requiring
precision in equipment builds or repairs. Purchases supplies and parts. Responsible for asset inventory.
Schedules contractors. Responsible for equipment rental. Duties reflect substantial variety and complexity.
Assignments are broad in nature and usually require creativity and originality. Serves as a resource for others in
the resolution of complex problems and issues.
Complexity: Applies intermediate skills that require in-depth knowledge of function/specialization. May adapt
procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the more complex requirements of the position.
Supervision Received: Receives general direction working from established policies and objectives. Employee
plans and carries out assignments and resolves most conflicts that arise. Completed work is checked only to
determine feasibility and compatibility with other work, or effectiveness in meeting objectives of the unit.
Supervision Given: May function as a first-line supervisor over staff employees by assigning, scheduling and
monitoring work. The majority of work time is spent performing many of the same duties of those supervised.
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s Degree in related field and five years of related experience; or any
equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Function of Job: This position is responsible for tuning, regulating, repairing, refurbishing, and rebuilding musical
instruments. Highly specialized skill requiring precision in equipment builds or repairs. Purchases supplies and
parts. Makes recommendations on purchase of high dollar equipment (i.e. pianos). Responsible for repair shop
operations (may include revenue-generating operations). Teaches repair classes. Selects and coordinates
contractors. Oversees equipment rental. Budget monitoring. Duties reflect substantial variety and complexity.
Assignments are broad in nature and usually require creativity and originality. Serves as a resource for others in
the resolution of complex problems and issues.
Complexity: Applies advanced skills in specialization. Requires extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of
function/specialization, and the ability to integrate and analyze practical information from such
function/specialization. Required to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the
requirements of the position.
Supervision Received: Receives general direction. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
assigned tasks and goals.
Supervision Given: May function as a first-line supervisor over benefits-eligible staff. Oversees the day-to-day
operations of a group of employees. Responsible for training and development of subordinate staff, estimating
personnel needs, assigning work, meeting completion dates, interpreting and ensuring consistent application of
organizational policies.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in related field and four years of related experience; or any
equivalent combination of education, training and experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are
required:
• Thorough knowledge of related tools, equipment, materials, and other devices
• Ability to read and interpret complex drawings, charts, and designs
• Ability to work from ideas and to draw own sketches and designs

8035 ELECTRONICS ENGINEER-EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is professional engineering work involving the performance of engineering and
research functions in the planning, design, development and construction of complex electronic equipment.
Work often includes the planning, development, and testing of new types of electronic circuits of advanced
design. Purchases supplies and parts. Duties reflect substantial variety and complexity. Assignments are broad
in nature and usually require creativity and originality. Serves as a resource for others in the resolution of complex
problems and issues.
Complexity: Applies advanced skills in specialization. Requires extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of
function/specialization, and the ability to integrate and analyze practical information from such
function/specialization. Required to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the
requirements of the position.

• Thorough understanding of and competence in the use of electronic instruments.
• Ability to design and construct complex electronic equipment without the aid of blueprints or
diagrams.
• Ability to perform neat and accurate construction of electronic equipment.
• Ability to troubleshoot and maintain complex electronic equipment.
• Ability to test equipment under extremes of operation.
• Ability to collect data and plot results in graphical and tabular form.
• Ability to diagram equipment, with explanatory notes, as required.
• Skill in supervising the work of other electronics technical personnel.
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff and faculty.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
