PHYSICIAN CAREER BAND
This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this
classification. It is not designed to contain or be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, responsibilities and
qualifications required of employees assigned to the job.
8730 PHYSICIAN - EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for the clinical assessment/evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and
management of patients in accordance with guidelines and generally accepted standards of care. Duties include
evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment plans and appropriate ongoing care; ordering and interpreting
lab tests as needed; completing accurate medical records for patients in the electronic medical record system;
participating in peer reviews; and supervising Nurse Practitioners or Physician's Assistants. Duties and tasks
are frequently non-routine. Resolves most questions, including some where only limited standardization exists.
Refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.
Complexity:
Applies both intermediate and advanced skills that require in-depth knowledge of
function/specialization. May adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the more
complex requirements of the position.
Supervision Received: Receives general direction. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
assigned tasks and goals.
Supervision Given: May function in a lead capacity over staff employees by assigning, scheduling, and
monitoring work.
Minimum Qualifications: Medical degree from an accredited medical school; Board Certification or Board Eligible
from a recognized board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic
Association (AOA) preferably in a primary care specialty; current license by Texas Medical Board; Texas
Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DPS) and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA) to
include Schedule II drugs; and three years of experience as a practicing physician. The following knowledge,
skills, and abilities are required:
 Ability to practice medicine within the scope of license, training and credentials.
 Demonstrated knowledge and skill in evaluating, planning, implementing individual patient
care.
 Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations governing the practice
of medicine
 Ability to care for a diverse patient population.
 Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
8733 PSYCHIATRIST- EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for providing care for patients with psychiatric/mental health
conditions in accordance with guidelines and generally accepted standards of care. Duties include clinical
assessment/evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients; prescribing appropriate psychotropic
medications; completing accurate medical records for patients in the electronic medical record system; and
participating in peer reviews. Duties and tasks are frequently non-routine. Resolves most questions, including
some where only limited standardization exists. Refers only the most complex issues to higher levels.

Certificate (DPS) or ability to obtain; and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA) to include

8731 ASSISTANT MEDICAL DIRECTOR/HEALTH CENTER - EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for assisting the Medical Director of the Health Center with policy
and procedure development and implementation, as well as providing care for patients in accordance with
guidelines and generally accepted standards of care. Duties include providing functional supervision for
Physicians, nursing staff, and laboratory/radiology staff; evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment plans
and appropriate ongoing care; ordering and interpreting lab tests as needed; completing accurate medical
records for patients in the electronic medical record system; and participating in peer reviews. Duties reflect
substantial variety and complexity. Assignments are broad in nature and usually require creativity and originality.
Serves as a resource for others in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
Complexity: Applies advanced skills in specialization. Requires extensive theoretical and practical knowledge
of function/specialization, and the ability to integrate and analyze practical information from such
function/specialization. Required to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the
requirements of the position.
Supervision Received: Receives general direction. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish
assigned tasks and goals.
Supervision Given: May function as a first-line supervisor over staff employees by assigning, scheduling and
monitoring work. The majority of work time is spent performing many of the same duties of those supervised.
Minimum Qualifications: Medical degree from an accredited medical school; Board Certification or Board Eligible
from a recognized board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic
Association (AOA) preferably in a primary care specialty; current license by Texas Medical Board; Texas
Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DPS) and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA) to

include Schedule II drugs; and five years of experience as a practicing physician. Supervisory experience is
preferred. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:

 Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations governing the practice
of medicine

8732 MEDICAL DIRECTOR/HEALTH CENTER - EXEMPT
Function of Job: This position is responsible for the coordination of campus-wide medical operations and
services, as well as providing care for patients in accordance with guidelines and generally accepted standards
of care. Duties include developing and implementing policies and procedures; supervising Physicians, nursing
staff, and laboratory/radiology staff; evaluating, diagnosing, and providing treatment plans and appropriate
ongoing care; ordering and interpreting lab tests as needed; completing accurate medical records for patients in
the electronic medical record system; and participating in peer reviews. Position is responsible for management
of function and personnel for a unit, has the authority and autonomy to make significant choices and decisions,
and is responsible for developing and allocating the associated budget(s).
Complexity: Applies advanced skills in specialization. Requires extensive theoretical and practical knowledge of
function/specialization, and the ability to integrate and analyze practical information from such
function/specialization. Required to adapt procedures, processes, tools, equipment and techniques to meet the
requirements of the position.
Supervision Received: Receives only broad administrative guidance. Assignments are in terms of setting
objectives within strategic planning goals. Employee has responsibility for planning, designing and implementing
programs, projects and studies and sets goals for a major unit or department. Approval from higher supervision
may be necessary only in terms of financial impact of availability of funds but little reference to detail is discussed
with supervisor.
Supervision Given: Functions as a director of a division or department, supervises management level employees
and indirectly supervises staff employees under this position’s line of authority.
Minimum Qualifications: Medical degree from an accredited medical school; Board Certification or Board Eligible
from a recognized board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic
Association (AOA) preferably in a primary care specialty; current license by Texas Medical Board; Texas
Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DPS) and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate (DEA) to
include Schedule II drugs; and six years medical administration experience including supervisory experience.
The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:
 Ability to practice medicine within the scope of license, training and credentials.
 Demonstrated knowledge and skill in evaluating, planning, implementing individual patient
care.
 Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations governing the practice
of medicine
 Ability to care for a diverse patient population.
 Strong management and supervisory skills and abilities.
 Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed
