Trying to maintain neutrality after
World War I, rejecting:
•Versailles Treaty
•Covenant of the League of Nations
Japanese aggression:
•seizing Manchuria in 1931
•war on China in 1937
US response to Japanese aggresion:
•Roosevelt shuts off American trade
•Embargo on exporting aircraft to Japan
•Freezing all Japanese assets in the United States
US fleet at Pearl Harbor remained the only
serious threat to Japan’s navy(blocking oil
tankers). Japan reacted.
Attack on Pearl Harbor:
•2400 Americans dead
•Pacific fleet crippled
•US fully involved in the World War II
•Hitler declares war on US and Great Britain
(result of US aid to Allies)
US supplied Allies with war material worth
more than $50 billion during the next four
years
Chief battlegrounds:
•Europe
•Asia
•North Africa
•Atlantic & Pacific Oceans
First US troops on British Isles – January 1942
Allies carry out air strike on Germany – May 1942 (not so
effective)
War in the Pacific:
December 1941 - May 1942, time of unbroken
Japanese military victories
By late 1942 Japan had established great Empire
(as a result of more flexible politics)
Unlike the Nazis, the Japanese made negotiations
with local nationalists
In mid-1942, events take a different turn
United States gained superiority in Pacific
Huge advantage by cracking Japanese secret code
(Situation had been fluctuating since 1940)
In May 1943, Allies defeat the combined German and
Italian forces (the Battle of Tunisia)
Anglo-American forces land in Morocco and Algeria
In 1945, after the invasion of Berlin, Japan was issued
an unconditional surrender by the United States,
Great Britain and Soviet Union.
After ignoring the ultimatum, United States dropped
atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6
and August 9, 1945, killing more than 130, 000 civilians.
Japan surrendered instantly, ending the Second World
war
