Title: How to Upgrade from MSDE to SQL Server 2008 R2
Express
This article applies to: Sage Fund Accounting, version 10.2.x and higher.
Question
How do I upgrade my existing instance of Sage Fund Accounting so it uses
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instead of MSDE?
Answer
Summary of steps you must execute in order to take advantage of the newer
SQL 2008 R2 technology for your Sage Fund Accounting system:
1. Backup your organization database(s) and the system database
(npssqlsys),
2. Remove the existing Sage Fund Accounting Server software
3. Remove the existing MSDE instance,
4. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
5. Install Sage Fund Accounting Server and Workstation on the server from
the v11.0 CD.
6. Install Sage Fund Accounting Workstation on client computers, if
necessary, see Note 2
Why upgrade from MSDE to SQL Server 2008 R2?
SQL Server 2008 R2 Express offers increased maximum database size
(10GB), a graphical user interface (SQL Server 2008 R2 Management
Studio Express), and it does not have the MSDE workload governor.
IMPORTANT!
 The first step is to backup all organization database(s) and the system
database (npssqlsys), knowledge base article 162961. The uninstall
process will not remove files which were not installed by Sage Fund
Accounting or Microsoft, but it is the best practice to have current backups
when performing a significant operation.
 If you plan on making a copy of MIP Share to protect custom formats or
other files, please move the copy of MIP Share to another computer or
suitable backup media before you reinstall Sage Fund Accounting.

On the computer where Sage Fund Accounting Server is installed, go into
Control Panel and open Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall all
components related to Sage Fund Accounting in the following order.
1. Sage MIP Fund Accounting Workstation – (if it exists)
2. Sage Desktop – (if it exists)
3. Sage MIP Fund Accounting Server
4. Sage MIP Fund Accounting Sample Organization – (if it exists)
5. Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MIP_Engine) –
Note 1: MIP_Engine is the default name; your instance could be
named something else. See Note 2.
6. Microsoft Merge Modules for Sage MIP Fund Accounting (if it
exists)
Note 2 If you use the same instance name when you install SQL 2008
Express R2 as was used with MSDE, e.g., MIP_Engine, you will not have
to uninstall and reinstall Sage MIP Fund Accounting from your client
workstations. You must have already uninstalled MSDE in order to use
the same name with the SQL 2008 Express R2 install.

The files and folders left behind will be your organization database(s) and
your backup files. Do not delete any files or folders at this point. If MSDE
was installed using the default path (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$MIP_ENGINE\Data), the Data folder will contain your
organization database. You may leave it here for the moment. In this
example, MyDatabase is the live production database used before
uninstalling MIP.

All backups made by the Sage MIP Fund Accounting backup utility which
produces files with the extension of *.NPS, will be in the Backup folder
right above the Data folder unless the location was changed. These
locations will be relevant after Sage Fund Accounting V11.0 has been
reinstalled.

Please locate the MIP Share folder if you have more than one drive or
partition on the server. Custom formats and any files for folders you
created will remain behind in the MIP Share folder structure. Be sure to
reinstall MIP Share to the same location so those files will be available.
For example, if your MIP Share is located at D:\MIP Share, you must be
sure during the installation process to change the location to D:\MIP
Share. If MIP Share was removed during the uninstall process, that
means all files were native to Sage Fund Accounting and they will be
reinstalled from the CD.

Now that you’ve uninstalled all the components for Sage Fund Accounting
on your server, you must download and install Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Express R2. Please see article 318438 if you are unfamiliar with installing
SQL. NOTE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 requires the following
components to be installed prior to the installation process.
1. Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1
2. Windows Installer 4.5
3. Windows PowerShell 1.0
This is more relevant to older operating systems like Windows 2003
Server or Windows XP. If components are missing, the SQL install will
stop and alert you and you may re required to restart the server.

After SQL 2008 Express R2 has been successfully deployed, insert the
v11.0 CD to install Sage Fund Accounting.

Click on Begin Installation Process. Follow the installation wizard until
Sage Fund Accounting Server and Workstation are installed on the server.
Refer to the Quick Start or the Installation Guide on the CD for completing
the process.

During the Sage Fund Accounting Server install, be sure to browse the
location of MIP Share to the original location if you own Forms Designer or
have non-native files (from 3rd party software, for example) or folders in
MIP Share.

Installing a Sage Fund Accounting workstation is not required on the
server, but it is recommended.

After the installation of Sage Fund Accounting Server and Sage Fund
Accounting Workstation on the server is complete, move the backups you
made of your organization database(s) and system database (npssqlsys)
from the old Backup folder under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$MIP_Engine\Backup to the new Backup folder created by
the SQL 2008 R2 Express installation – C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Backup.

Log into the Administration Module using the Admin user and
the default password and restore (File>Restore) the npssqlsys
database from the Backup folder for SQL 2008 Express R2 to
restore MIP users. Finally, restore your organization
database(s) – DO NOT restore an organization database using
the name of npssqlsys from the drop-down menu. New
installations require that you type in the organization database
name in the Restore to Database field; once restored, the
database name will be in the drop-down for future use.

At this point Sage Fund Accounting has been successfully
migrated from MDSE to SQL Server 2008 Express. You may
delete the MSSQL$MIP_ENGINE folder at this time as it is no
longer used by Sage Fund Accounting.

NOTE 3: If you used a new instance name when you installed
SQL 2008 Express R2, you must uninstall and reinstall your
network Sage Fund Accounting workstations according to the
installation instructions so that information is written in the
registry. See Note 2.
