SQL Server Saves Orgs up to 49%
Over 3 Years ($845,000) vs. Oracle
Key Takeaways
SQL Server offers a TCO advantage in
every cost category over Oracle
Labor cost drivers
Operations & management
Infrastructure
SQL Server 2000 has most significant
cost advantage in ongoing
DB management tasks
Study is based on analysis
of 10 enterprise customers
across variety of industries currently
using both

What is a Migration?
 Technical name is OS/DB Migration or Heterogeneous
System Copy
 Involves change of R/3 system’s OS, or RDBMS or both
 No defined methodology for this activity prior to 1997
(Data move impossibly complex)
Example: Customer on Sun Solaris/Oracle wants to go to
Windows 2000 and SQL Server 2000
www.realTech-USA.com
Why do customers migrate?
 Reduced / No availability of support for current OS / RDBMS
 Continuing or new hardware/license costs (maintenance agreements)
 Unplanned growth of systems (Db growth or new dimension planning)
 Unplanned growth of company (may have had a VERY good year)
 Merger with another company
(standardization effort of 2 R/3 systems)
 Standardization with other IT systems in company (support consol.)
 Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
 Can be logistically and financially beneficial to move to Windows
2000/SQL Server 2000 platform.

SAP Migration Service
SAP offers special tools for performing a Heterogeneous system copy
Use of standard database tools or homogeneous system copy methods are not possible
for changing the Operating system and/or Database of an R/3 installation
SAP developed ‘toolkit’ in 3rd Qtr of 1997
 Specific versions of R3INST and later R3SETUP
 3 Checks similar to Earlywatch
 Support for technical problems
 Similar in scope to an upgrade

Migration Project Overview
www.realTech-USA.com
Migration Project Timeline
Begin planning
at least 5
weeks prior to
the first test
All
Development
should be
frozen from
the time of
regression
testing to finish
Migration testing should
begin 5 to 6 weeks prior
to the final migration
During stress
testing
2 to 4 weeks after
final migration
www.realTech-USA.com
Migration Process Overview
Data export from source system
Installation of the RDBMS in the target
R/3 Instance installation on target system
Move data export to the target system (FTP, tape etc.)
Create the target database instance (datafiles)
Load the data export into the target database
Check all the migration log files
Check target consistency / Perform other clean-up tasks
Reconfigure CTS, printing, interface connections, desktop, etc.
Knowledge transfer for managing new platform
www.realTech-USA.com
Migration Requirements
Knowledge of the Source RDBMS
Knowledge of the ABAP Data Dictionary
Knowledge of SQL Server (target RDBMS)
Certified Migration Consultant
Separate source and target system hardware
SAP Migration Services purchased (includes kit)
Install kit for target system
Repository version cannot change during migration
