Science: Chapter 1 Study Guide
Review all information on this study guide. The test over rocks and minerals will be Friday,
November 2nd.
You will have to match the word with the correct definition on the test. They will not be in order.
1. mineral-an object that is solid, is formed in nature, and has never been alive
2. rock- a solid made of minerals
3. crust- the solid outside layer of the Earth
4. mantle- the middle layer of the Earth
5. core- the center of the Earth
6. igneous rock- a rock that was once melted rock but has cooled and hardened
7. sedimentary rock- a rock formed from material that has settled into layers and been squeezed until it
hardens into rock
8. metamorphic rock- a rock that has been changed by heat and pressure
9. rock cycle- the process in which one type of rock changes into another type of rock
10. fossil- something that has lasted from a living thing that died long ago
Things you need to know:
11. Hardness, color, and shape are examples of a mineral’s properties.
12. Cast is formed when mud or minerals fill a mold.
13. Iron is used to make ships, buildings, and cars. It is not used to make pencils. Graphite is used
for this.
14. The three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic
15. Sedimentary rocks can become metamorphic rocks by: heat and pressure
16. Scientists are most likely to find fossils in: Sedimentary rocks
17. You will need to be able to label Earth’s 3 layers.
