Sociology Syllabus – Fall 2014 Ms. Miller – Room H-16 “Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. …sociologists investigate the structure of groups, organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts.” - American Sociological Association (2006) During this semester we will be learning about human society and how it functions. We will attempt to understand the different perspectives on sociology, the groups that make up the human landscape, and how different cultures interact in different ways. Units of Study – We will attempt to cover all or most of the following units: The World of Sociology Culture Group Behavior and Socialization Deviance and Crime Social Stratification and Class Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Age The Family Guidelines for the Classroom: Education and Religion Sports and Entertainment Politics and Economy Cities ,Population, and the Environment Social Movements and Social Change Arrive on time and be in class every day. Respect yourself, the classroom, and your education. Water only, no food please. NO ELECTRONICS ALLOWED. Please do not bring your devices into the classroom. If I see it I will take it. Honest…you can work without being “plugged in”! o First warning – this is your first warning. o Second warning – pick it up in the office the following morning. o Third warning – Your parents will need to pick it up. Discipline referral. Students will be graded on the following: Projects (1 each quarter) – 50% A project handout will be distributed in class to explain the project options and requirements. Group assignments and individual classwork – 50% Missing/Late Work: Students who are absent or do not complete work during the time given in class will need to be responsible for completing the work on their own by the end of that unit. The classroom will be open Monday through Thursday from 3:30-4:00. Please take advantage of this time to stay up to date. If you have a question or need help please see me immediately.
