Earth?

Physical Layers
Outermost and Innermost Layers

Outermost: The layer that is outside of all the other layers


The Crust
Innermost: The layer that is inside of all the other layers

The Core (or Inner Core)
Layers of the Earth


Outer to Inner: (starting from the outside layer)

Inner Core, Outer Core, Mantle, Crust
Crust

Definition:
Hard and rigid, the earth's outermost and thinnest layer (mostly made of basalt
and granite).
Mantle

Definition:
This dense layer of the earth is made of hot, semisolid rock (silicon) and is
located directly below the crust.
Outer Core

Definition:
This layer of the earth lies between the mantle and the solid inner core. It is
the only liquid layer, a sea of mostly iron and nickel
Inner Core

Definition:
The innermost layer of the earth, an extremely hot, solid sphere of mostly
iron and nickel.
Physical Layers of the Earth
“LAM”
Lithosphere

Definition: the rigid outermost part of the earth, consisting of the crust and
upper mantle
Aesthenosphere

Definition: The plastic layer of the mantle, on which pieces of the lithosphere
move
Mesosphere

The strong, lower part of the mantle that is beneath the asthenosphere
Physical Layers & Composition Layers

Solid
nickel
& iron
Liquid
nickel
& iron
Tectonic Plates

Definition:
Several large slabs of the lithosphere that hold the continents and oceans and
are slowly but constantly moving around the earth.
BONUS INFORMATION…

What layer makes up 33% of the Earth’s mass?

What layer do we live on?
