Background
Throughout the world, AbP·ID is increasing in use as both a pre-screening DNA tool
and as an alternative to DNA. This technology is used in day to day policing and to
quickly identify suspects where blood is left at a scene. It has even featured in the
US drama CSI (2012).
AbP·ID can also determine between twins (as twins have a different antibody profile
whereas share the same DNA profile). Furthermore, up until the age of 2, a child will
share the same antibody profile as their mother. This means that at a fatality involving children, it can quickly be determined which child belongs to which mother.

Antibody profiling has clear benefits to DVI teams and provides the ultimate solution in the fast identification of body parts.
A database could be constructed to hold the antibody profile of key personnel e.g.
military personnel. This would allow victims to be quickly and accurately identified
following any fatalities and grouped accordingly.
Following a fatality there can be numerous body parts and knowing which body
parts belong together is a time consuming process. To group and identify these
parts, DNA testing is used and this is very costly, it can take a considerable amount
of time and lab conditions are often required.
AbP·ID tests are field deployable and can be conducted without the use of a specialist forensic laboratory. They can be used to determine which body parts belong
together and results are obtained within 1 to 2 hours.
The benefits to DVI teams are obvious when compared to DNA. AbP·ID saves time,
effort and expense in the grouping of body parts. The faster the identification, the
greater the chance of securing further evidence and for non-criminal fatality incidents, the faster the body can be returned to their families.
An AbP·ID laboratory can be set up with the minimum of effort in the
tightest of spaces. Staff do not need to be highly-trained and within
days will be competent to carry out testing and analysis using
AbP·Image® the proprietary digital imaging software that accurately
and quantitatively compares one AbP·ID test result to another.

to build an AbP·ID database.
AbP·ID: The Science
Every human has a unique Individual Specific Autoantibody (ISA) signature or profile. These special antibodies perform a kind of housekeeping and
have nothing to do with antibodies which fight pathogens. A newborn baby’s antibody profile exactly matches his or her mother’s, but that profile
gradually changes until a stable, one-of-a-kind pattern is formed at about age two. From that point on, autoantibodies never change and will remain
unlike those of any other individual. Even identical twins have their own individually unique antibody profile.

What you need to know
Q – How does AbP·ID work as a presumptive test for DNA?
AbP·ID tests can be performed to determine which suspects and evidence warrant DNA testing. By running AbP·ID tests on all suspicious blood evidence as soon as it is collected, it can be determined what evidence warrants DNA testing, saving invaluable investigative time and effort.
Q – Which biological fluids work with AbP·ID?
AbP·ID works on blood, delivering results in two to three hours. Other AbP·ID tests using saliva and semen are currently in development.
Q – How large an evidence sample is required to run an AbP·ID test?
30 microliters of evidence is the recommended volume for each test, but AbP·ID will work on smaller sample volumes.
Q – Can it compare suspect and evidence blood? How does it compare the result?
Yes it can compare blood from the suspect and the evidence. An AbP·ID test is performed for each blood sample (i.e. from suspect and evidence),
and the results for each test are compared using the accompanying software AbP·Image.
Q – Can I build a database of reference suspects and scenes and run searches on it? Yes.
How does the process work?
AbP·ID uses a test chip coated with protein spots. When a drop of blood is introduced to the chip, the antibodies present in the fluid adhere to the
proteins on the chip. To make the antibodies visible, a fluid is added to the chip which stains the bound antibodies. When these protein spots are
washed with an additional series of developing solutions, a unique and completely distinct pattern is revealed. The initial AbP·ID product uses whole
blood, blood serum and blood stains. Semen and saliva tests are currently in development.
