Cells Web Quest
Processes of Cells
Some of the standards that we are required to learn involve the process that cells go
through. Today you will spend time looking at the specific jobs and processes that both
animal and plant cells can perform. You must stay on task and cannot visit other websites
such as your mail, your grades or some personal website.
Go to the Nooksack School District Website  High School  Staff Nunamaker to Access the
Websites.
http://www.scsc.k12.in.us/SMS/Teachers/Martin/intro.htm
1. Scroll Down to Resources and Click on Typical Animal and Plant Cells.
2. At the bottom of this Animal Cell page click on “Click here to see a typical plant cell.”
3. Click on the chloroplast and follow the information presented here.
What is the actual job of a chloroplast?
What two things are needed as the raw materials for photosynthesis?
Besides the raw materials, what two other things are required for photosynthesis?
Click on the Letter A – The Structure of the Chloroplast page at the bottom of this page.
Photosynthesis is essentially an ________________________________________________________.
_______ energy changes to ________________ energy that is stored in _________________________.
Now click on B) The chemical process of photosynthesis. We will be studying photosynthesis next week
but what are the two main parts to photosynthesis? Without reading it, what do you think each one
means?
One Part is the ______________________________ and it may mean __________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________.
The second part is the ______________________________ and it may mean __________________
______________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________.
Part 2 - Search for the structure of a chloroplast. Draw a chloroplast and label at least three parts of a
chloroplast in the space below.
Part 3 – Go to
http://www.tooter4kids.com/autumn/leafy_facts.htm
1. Read this page and then click NEXT at the bottom.
2. Name 3 Simple Leaves _____________________, _______________________________ and
_____________________________________________ .
3. Name two compound leaves. ______________________ and ________________________
4. Describe the difference between a simple and a compound leaf.
Part 4- Go to
http://www.weather.com/outlook/driving/fallfoliage/regiondetail/wa1
Compare the current fall colors of eastern and western Washington. Copy and paste the map to support
your answer but you must describe your comparison.
When you get your exit task back from yesterday, AND if the partial understanding or lacks
understanding boxes are checked, then go to the following site: (Note-if the “Understands Concept”
box is checked, go directly to #5 below.)
http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/eek/veg/trees/treestruecolor.htm
Read Where
do leaf colors come from?
1. Why are plants green? ___________________________________________________________
2. When is anthocyanin made? What is anthocyanin and where does it form?
3. Read
How do leaves change color?
4. Describe how trees respond to a decreasing amount of sunlight.
5. Go to http://www.brightstorm.com/science/biology/cell-functions-and-processes/celldiffusion/
and watch the short video.
6. In your own words, summarize diffusion. Give an example of how something in your body may
undergo diffusion.
7. Search to see if you can find a picture or diagram showing diffusion.
8. Search to find out what osmosis is and how it compares to diffusion.
