The renaissance The Rebirth of Europe The End Of The Middle Ages • • • The Bubonic Plague: It killed or moved almost half of Europe! Lords used to have plenty of serf’s to work their land, now they didn’t Lords had to pay people to come work for them. The Result • • Because all these people were moving to where there were jobs, big cities started forming instead of small towns Some people didn’t have to work, so they could just sit and think, or paint, or invent, or even just read. The First Awakening • The time After the middle ages and the feudal era came to an end, people left their fiefdoms and started looking for better lives. Most people moved where the money was, Just like today. the Italian city-states • • • • In the 1300’s, Italy Wasn't ruled by kings but by independent citystates. These were The centers of Commerce: Florence Milan Venice commerce • • What is Commerce? It’s “The buying and selling of a large quantity of goods.” These cities became full of wealthy men, and they wanted to show how rich they were. Today, someone might wear jewelry or drive a fancy car. Back then, it was big houses and works of art. A new day in Florence • • • Florence was the birthplace of the “RenaIssance” This was a revived interest in the intellectual and economic ideas of the past ( Like Greece and Rome). Art, Social, Scientific and Political ideas from old cultures were popular once again. The Art work of The Renaissance • Famous Painters and sculptors: – – – Raphael Michelangelo Leonardo da Vinci Paintings Leonardo da vinci Leonardo da Vinci is best remembered as the painter of the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. But he's almost as famous for his amazing list of other talents: he tried architecture, sculpture, engineering, geology, hydraulics and the military arts, all with success, and in his spare time came up with ideas for parachutes and flying machines that looked like inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries. He made detailed drawings of human anatomy which are still used today. Leonardo also was weird enough to write notebook entries in mirror (backwards) script, a trick which kept many of his observations from being widely known until long after he died.
