INTEGRATED SCIENCE 512 Midterm Review Sheet 2012 The exam will cover everything from the beginning of the year (quarters 1 + 2) until now. The following is a list of the topics we have covered. A periodic table and table of ions will be provided for you. CHEMISTRY: 1. What is the difference between a physical and a chemical change? 2. What are protons, electrons, neutrons? Where are they located in the atom? 3. Be able to find the atomic mass, atomic number, # of protons, electrons and neutrons of any element on the periodic table. For example, find all of the above for Calcium: a. b. c. d. e. Atomic number= Atomic mass= # of protons= # of electrons= # of neutrons= 4. What are the periods and groups in terms of the periodic table? 5. Where are metals? Where are they located on the periodic table? 6. Where are nonmetals? Where are they located on the periodic table? 7. Where are metalloids? Where are they located on the periodic table? 8. Where are the gases located on the table? 9. Where are the liquids and gases located on the table? 10.For each major Family on the periodic table know its location and its properties: alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, , halogens & noble gases 11.What is a Bohr model of the atom? Draw Oxygen using the Bohr model. 12.What is a Lewis dot diagram? Draw Boron and Chlorine using a Lewis dot diagram. 13.What is an ionic bond? Name 4 properties of ionic compounds. Be able to identify these bonds. Give 3 examples of substances that form an ionic bond. 14.What is a covalent bond? What are the properties? Be able to identify these bonds. 15.What is an isotope? Give an example using carbon. HYDROCARBONS & COMBUSTION: 16.What is a hydrocarbon? 17. What is the difference between alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes? What kind of bonds does each have? Which of these is saturated? Which of these is unsaturated? 18. Draw hexane, hexene and hexyne. 19.What is an isomer? Draw butane and an isomer of butane. 20.What 2 substances are necessary for combustion to occur? 21.Write the combustion equation. Label the reactants and products. 22.What are fossil fuels? Give 2 examples of fossil fuels. 23.What are the products of incomplete combustion? Why does incomplete combustion occur? POLYMERS: 24.What is a polymer? Give an example of one natural and one synthetic polymer. 25.What is a cross-liked polymer? How does cross linking effect polymer strength? 26.Compare and contrast hydrophobic vs. hydrophilic polymers. What is a hydrophobic polymer? Give an example. What is a hydrophilic polymer? Give an example. 27.What are acids and bases? 28.What is neutralization? What substances do you get when you combine an acid and a base? 29.How do you determine if you have an acid or a base using litmus paper? reading a pH scale? 30.Calculate the density of different material given their mass and volume.
