Emily Skinner (Mame) Emily Skinner has unequivocally
established herself as one of Broadway’s most engaging
and versatile performers. She was the first American chosen
for the starring role of Mrs. Wilkinson in the acclaimed
musical Billy Elliot. Skinner was nominated for a Tony Award
(with Alice Ripley) and received a Drama League Award
for her performance as Daisy Hilton in Side Show. Other
original Broadway cast credits include Jekyll & Hyde, James Joyce’s The Dead
(opposite Christopher Walken), The Full Monty, Dinner at Eight (Outer Critics
Circle Nomination), as well as The Actors Fund productions of The Best Little
Whorehouse in Texas and Dreamgirls.

Paramount Theater at Madison Square Gardens, York Theatre, Playwrights Horizons
and the Roundabout Theatre. Regionally, she appeared in leading roles at The
Kennedy Center, Signature Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre, Hangar Theatre, Old
Globe Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, McCarter Theatre, St. Louis MUNY, Goodspeed,
Bucks County Playhouse, Lyric Theater of Oklahoma, TheatreVirginia and numerous
others. She has a self-titled solo CD, and may be heard on multiple cast recordings
and audio books.
Desirée Roots Centéio (Vera) has been showcasing her
triple-threat talent for 30+ years and is thrilled to be back
on one of her most favorite stages. Richmond audiences
last saw her as Sofia in The Color Purple (Virginia Rep), and
as Dessa in Dessa Rose (Firehouse Theatre, People’s Choice
Award) Other Credits: Narrator, Aretha Franklin and Diana
Ross, Beehive; TiMoune, Once On This Island; Aldonza, Man of
LaMancha; Mazeppa, Gypsy; Nell, Ain’t MisBehavin; The Cosby Show (NBC); Turn
(AMC). In 2004, Desiree received the Theresa Pollack Prize for Vocal Excellence in
the Arts. None of these however, beat out her most favorite roles – mommy and wife.

Brandon McKinney (Young Patrick) is 11 years old and a
6th grader in Henrico County. He is thrilled to be returning
to the Virginia Rep stage! Brandon’s previous productions
with Virginia Rep include Winthrop in Music Man and part
of the company in ’Twas the Night before Christmas. He is
part of SPARC’s Spotlight touring group and starred in their
production of Pinocchio. He has also been in seven Character
Works productions including Tarzan, Oliver! and Beauty and the Beast. He would
like to thank his vocal coach, Ellen Papa, and his parents and four brothers for their
constant love and support.
Alexander Sapp (Patrick) was last seen as Buckingham
in Henley Street Theatre/Richmond Shakespeare’s production
of Richard III. Other recent credits include Steve in Grace
(TheatreLAB), Damis in Tartuffe (Virginia Rep), Stevie in
Good People (Cadence Theatre), Sebastian in Twelfth Night
(Sycamore Rouge), and Ray Dooley in The Beauty Queen of
Leenane (Henley Street Theatre). He can be seen next in
Henley Street Theatre/Richmond Shakespeare’s production of The Lion In Winter.
Alexander’s other passions include fishing, reading science fiction, and the
Baltimore Orioles.
Ray Sheen (Ito) Off-Off-Broadway: And Give Us the

Andrew C. Boothby (Dwight Babcock) is always happy to be
back on stage at the November, where he was last seen as
Cléante in Virginia Rep’s excellent production of Tartuffe. Other

Roof, My Fair Lady, Scorched Earth, The Constant Wife, On
Golden Pond, and Legacy of Light (Virginia Rep); Mr. Marmalade

Frank Creasy (Mr. Upson/Ensemble) Virginia Rep credits
include: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Music Man, Lend Me a Tenor,
The Sound of Music, On Golden Pond, Barefoot in the Park,
and The Man Who Came to Dinner. Earlier this year he played
multiple roles in Beyond the Rainbow at Swift Creek Mill. More
recently, you may have seen him in commercials for The
Walking Dead as Dr. Seymour Deadman on Fox-Richmond. Samuel Elton (Ensemble) is so excited to be returning to
the Virginia Rep stage. His past shows with Virginia Rep
were Fiddler on the Roof (Fyedka) and Charlotte’s Web
(Wilbur). He has also appeared in several productions with
CYT Fredericksburg and Riverside Dinner Theater including The Wizard of Oz (Scarecrow), Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere),
and Oliver (Fagin), along with ensemble rolls in Gypsy, Les

Brent Gallahan (Junior/Ensemble) is ecstatic to once again
be a part of Virginia Rep. He is a graduate from VCU where he
earned a BFA in Theatre Performance. Favorite credits include:
Virginia Rep Shrek, Stone Soup (Theatre IV National Tour),
Seussical, Honk; Richmond Triangle Players Pageant; Theatre
VCU Avenue Q, Grease; Henley Street Theatre Co. Lord of the
Flies; Riverside Dinner Theater Ring of Fire, The Pajama Game,
Cariel Hughes (Ensemble) has been with the Virginia Repertory
Theater family for nearly a year, making her debut as Frankie
in The Three Little Pigs last Fall, and last Summer as an
ensemble member in The Color Purple. With most of her acting
experience in commercial, television, and film, Cariel’s most
recent work on screen was in the Discovery Channel’s Wicked
Attractions. Dancing since she was three, Cariel has trained in
everything from ballet to hip-hop, and has studied at both Broadway Dance Center
and Alvin Ailey Dance Theater. Cariel holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and
Dance, a Master’s in Forensic Psychology.
Mallory Keene (Ensemble) is thrilled to be back at Virginia Rep!
You may remember her from last year’s production of The Music
Man. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Shenandoah
Conservatory. She would like to thank her family and friends

Anthony Cosby (Ensemble) is thrilled for the opportunity to
hit the stage at Virginia Rep once again! His credits include The
Music Man, Once on This Island, Dreamgirls, Joseph & The
Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Hairspray, and most recently,
Virginia Rep’s hit production The Color Purple. He has also
appeared on season 1 of AMC’s Channel series TURN. A graduate
of Shaw University in Raleigh, NC., he received his B.A. in Mass
Communications and minored in Performing Arts. He would like to thank his family

Paul S. Major (Ensemble) is thrilled to be spending the holidays
with Virginia Rep again. He was recently seen as George in
The Drowsy Chaperone (Swift Creek Mill), Margaret Mead in
Hair (Firehouse Theatre) and The Gander in Charlotte’s Web
(Virginia Rep). He has also had the pleasure of performing at
two of his favorite places on earth, Dollywood and The Lost
Colony. He holds a B.F.A in Music Theatre from Shenandoah
Conservatory and is a Teaching Artist for S.P.A.R.C He sends love to his friends and
family that have supported through all of his artistic endeavors.

Will Meredith (Ensemble) is thrilled to return to Virginia Rep
after performing in the ensemble of Fiddler on the Roof last
season! Other regional credits include Spamalot (Historian/
Herbert) A Chorus Line (Mark) Oklahoma! (Ali Hakim) and
Taming of the Shrew (Lucentio). Most recently, he played
Nathan in Theatre Boys at 13th Street Repertory theatre in New
York. He received his B.F.A. from Western Kentucky University
and is a proud member of New York City’s LMProject! Special thanks to the entire

Erica Mini (Ensemble) is thrilled to be making her Virginia
Rep debut with this spectacular team. Favorite regional credits
include; Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Kindertransport, Les
Miserables, Mary Poppins, and Peter Pan. Film; Tell Me Anything,
When You Stop Looking. Many thanks to my Father- who knows
me best and loves me anyway- and all of my family and friends
for their unconditional love and support. Steven Moeslein (Ensemble) This is Steven’s first time performing with Virginia Repertory Theatre. He has worked with
regional theaters before, doing shows such as Little Women
and Children of Eden. Originally from Newport News, Virginia,
Steven studied Communications and Theatre at Christopher
Newport University. Most of his performance career has been
spent working at theme parks, like Kings Dominion and Busch
Gardens. Steven is very excited to perform with this wonderfully talented cast and
crew in this production of Mame.

Reed Patterson (Ensemble) is ecstatic to be in Virginia Rep’s
production of Mame! He would like to thank his family and

Aza Raine (Ralph Devine/Gregor/Ensemble) is excited to debut
on the Virginia Rep stage. Past credits include: Andy Lee in 42nd
Street, Fender in Hairspray (Dogwood Dell); Slim in Oklahoma
(Venice Florida Theatre); Ensemble in The Drowsy Chaperone
(Swift Creek Mill); Dermah in La Cage Aux Folles (Richmond
Triangle Players); and Bernie in Sweet Charity (Ft. Lee).
Andrew Reid (Ensemble) is thrilled to be working in his second
Virginia Rep production. He is currently enrolled in Theatre
performance at VCU, where he debuted on the Richmond theatre scene in their Fall 2013 production of Hairspray as Gilbert.
Outside of VCU, he had the enormous pleasure of appearing
in the ensemble and as Bobby in this past summer’s production
of The Color Purple and most recently, as policeman #2 in
Firehouse Theatre’s Wait Until Dark. He is incredibly humbled and grateful to have
been so welcomed and accepted within this city’s theatre community and is thankful
for everyone’s dedication and passion.
Anna Rose (Ensemble) is so excited to be apart of the Virginia
Repertory Theater’s production of Mame. She is a recent
graduate from Hunter College in NYC. Recent Credits: Spring

Libby Schneider (Pegeen/Ensemble) A Richmond native, Libby
is thrilled to make her Virginia Rep debut in Mame! She recently
graduated from Penn State University with her BFA in Musical
Theatre and has worked regionally on the East Coast and in
the Midwest. Previous credits include 9 to 5: The Musical
(Doralee Rhodes), John & Jen (Jen Tracy), [title of show]
(Heidi), I Love You Because (Marcy Fitzgerald), and The Last

Jody Smith (Mother Burnside/Ensemble) is “always happy” to
return to Virginia Repertory Theatre. Favorite previous roles
at Virginia Rep include appearances in The Scorched Earth
(Rosie Epps); WELL (Ann Kron); Fifth of July (Aunt Sally); Tuck
Everlasting (Mae Tuck) and several productions of Quilters
(Ensemble). Recent roles in the Richmond area include Diana
in Dixie Swim Club (Swift Creek Mill Theatre), Emilia in Comedy
of Errors (Richmond Shakespeare/Henley St Theatre), Sister Clarissa in Over The
Tavern (Hattheatre), Emily Gorski in Greetings (Swift Creek Mill Theatre) and Mattie
Fay in August: Osage County (Cadence Theatre).
Brad Willcuts (Ensemble/Associate Choreographer) is currently
a graduate student at VCU studying theatre performance pedagogy with an emphasis in movement and musical theatre. Before academia he has performed professionally for 14 years all
over the United States and Europe as an actor, singer, dancer,
director and choreographer. Recent credits include: Assistant
Movement Director Mother Courage at Arena Stage starring
Kathleen Turner; Choreographer Arabian Nights, Dir. Gabriel Barre; and Assistant
Fight and Military Movement Director for Broadway in Chicago’s Amazing Grace,
Chor. Christopher Gattelli. Dir. Gabriel Barre. For Natalie.
Megan Tatum (Ensemble) is excited to be making her debut
with Virginia Repertory Theatre! Megan is a senior at William
and Mary studying Kinesiology Pre-Physical Therapy and
Integration of Dance, Music, and Theatre Performance. She has
performed with Riverside Dinner Theatre (West Side Story),
Virginia Musical Theatre (Children of Eden), and at Busch
Gardens (Christmas Town). Megan trained at Appomattox
Regional Governor’s School, Richmond Ballet, and Chesterfield School of Ballet.
She is also a nanny and assists physical therapists with Broadway and ballet
companies. She would like to thank her family and friends for their encouragement

Patti D’Beck (Director/Choreographer) is a long-time veteran of Broadway. Her
credits as Associate Choreographer, Supervisor, Dance Captain, Actor include original
productions of Applause (Lauren Bacall), A Chorus Line, Pippin (Ben Vereen), Evita,
Annie Get Your Gun (Bernadette Peters), and Grease! She choreographed Rosie
O’Donnell’s 1977 Tony Awards. She’s worked with Broadway director/choreographers
including Bob Fosse and Michael Bennett. She has directed/choreographed many stars

Virginia Rep she has directed/choreographed Guys and Dolls, Thoroughly Modern Millie,
White Christmas, The Producers. Current productions are Man of La Mancha at VCU, 9
to 5, with Sally Struthers, and a new Frank Wildhorn musical, Mata Hari. Ms. D’Beck is an
Assistant Professor of Theatre at VCU. She’s taught at New York and Pace University;
holds a BA in Mathematics and Performing Arts from NYU and a Masters from NYU. Alana Thomas (Ensemble) is thrilled to return to the November
Theatre after appearing in productions that include: The Color
Purple, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Music Man, The Producers, My
Fair Lady, and White Christmas. She’s also performed in shows
at Riverside Dinner Theatre such as Legally Blonde, and Firehouse Theatre Project’s Dessa Rose. This past spring she was
featured in The Delete Button with Washington D.C. Theatre
Lab›s “Dramathon”, and attends Joy of Motion Dance Center. This VCU graduate
would like to thank her family and friends for their endless love and encouragement,
and the stupendous cast, crew, and production team!
John Winn (Music Director) is happy to be back at Virginia Rep where he last
appeared onstage as Harry The Horse in Guys And Dolls under Patti D’Beck’s
direction, 2008. He has toured Asia, Russia, Turkey and Mexico leading his jazz
quartet as singer/saxophonist and performs frequently in pit orchestras for touring
Broadway productions in Richmond and Norfolk. Currently teaching music at St.
Christopher’s School, formerly music faculty at VCU, UR, Longwood. 2005 winner
of Richmond Magazine’s “Outstanding Vocalist” Pollak Prize. Thrilled to be working
with Emily Skinner again after first performing together on this very stage in the
1978 production of A Christmas Carol.
Catherine Walker (Gloria/Ensemble) is half American and
half British. She graduated from Morehead State University in
Kentucky with a BA in Theatre and a minor in dance where she
received the 2012 Outstanding Student in Theatre Performance
award. Appearances include leading roles in The 39 Steps,
Dangerous Liaisons, Nunsense, Noises Off, and MSU’s Dance Ensemble. Catherine previously appeared as Gussie Jordan for the
past two years in The Stephen Foster Story in Bardstown, KY. This is Catherine’s first
time performing with Virginia Repertory and after living in Germany and Kentucky
she is thrilled to call Richmond her new home.
Ron Keller (Set Designer) Recent productions with Virginia Rep include The Color
Purple, To Kill A Mockingbird, Scorched Earth, White Christmas, and Thoroughly
Modern Millie. He has designed for many theatres around the country including the
Nevada Conservatory Theatre; Virginia Opera; Famous Door Theatre Swine Palace
Productions; New Millennium Studios; Illinois Shakespeare Festival; Shakespeare
Santa Cruz; Virginia Shakespeare Festival; Porthouse Theatre; The Clarence Brown
Company; Heritage Repertory Theatre; and Theatre Virginia among others. He is
Head of Design at Theatre VCU and in July will become Chair of the department. He
is a recipient of a Kennedy Center Gold Medallion for his work with KCACTF. He also
received a VCU Arts distinguished achievement award.
Lynne M. Hartman (Lighting Designer) Virginia Rep designs include: Other Desert
Cities, Tartuffe, Shrek, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Music Man, Red, Hay Fever, The
Producers, Spring Awakening, Seussical, Legacy of Light (2011 RTCC Award) and
The Sound of Music (2010 RTCC Award). Received 9 other RTCC nominations for
Outstanding Lighting Design. Based in Norfolk, Lynne has designed Honky Tonk
Angels, The Tempest and Swingtime Salute for Virginia Stage Company. Richmond:
Carol Piersol, TheatreVirginia, CenterStage, Richmond Ballet, The Carpenter Science
Theatre Co. and Dogwood Dell among others. Regional credits: Company of Fools,
The Lost Colony, McCarter Theatre, Auburn University, Kings Dominion, and Porthouse Theatre. Member: USA, Local 829.
Sue Griffin (Costume Design) has headed up the Virginia Rep costume department
for the last nine years. Over this time, the shop has produced costumes for more
than 300 shows, from traveling fairy tales to major musicals. With the help of the
full time shop, hundreds of costumes, wigs, shoes, and hats are sent out on stage or
packed up on tour. Some of the most memorable shows: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, A
Christmas Carol, and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. The more costumes the better.
Derek Dumais (Sound Designer), a Richmond native, graduated from Virginia
Commonwealth University, earning a BFA in Technical Theatre with an emphasis on
Sound Design. Favorite design credits include The Hound of the Baskervilles, Legacy
of Light, Shipwrecked!, This Wonderful Life, and Breath, Boom. Favorite design/
live mix credits include The Color Purple, Shrek The Musical, Spring Awakening, The
Sound of Music (2010 RTCC Award for Sound Design), and The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee. He is currently working on his first music release, exploring
analog modular synthesis and field records through ambient music. He sends love to
his wife, Shelley.
Christi B. Spann (Production Stage Manager) has served as Production Stage
Manager for Love in Afghanistan and ASM on Smokey Joe’s Cafe; Good People;
My Fair Lady; You, Nero; and Ah, Wilderness! with Arena Stage in Washington DC.
Other D.C. credits include The Bard’s Broadway and Merry Wives of Windsor with the
Shakespeare Theatre Company. Christi spent 12 seasons on the stage management
staff at the Denver Center Theatre Company and four summer seasons with The Great
River Shakespeare Festival. She received a BA from the University of Richmond.
DEDICATION
With unending respect and affection, this production of Mame is dedicated
to the memories of Roy Burgess and Kweli Leapart. Roy was Board President
of Barksdale Theatre in the mid-1990s, a singer/actor in the ensembles
of musicals at Barksdale and TheatreVirginia, and a Richmond theatre
aficionado second to none. His exhaustive treasury of original cast albums
and theatre posters is a core collection in Virginia Rep’s McAuley Kilgore
Theatre Library. Kweli starred in Theatre IV’s productions of A Raisin in the
Sun (winning a Best Actress Phoebe Award), Do Lord Remember Me and
Having Our Say. Both artists were cornerstones of Central Virginia’s theatre
community. They are greatly missed. We miss both of them tremendously.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin
Lee met in 1942 in New York City, where
they formed a partnership to write and
direct plays. Combining their talents,
Lawrence and Lee wrote a myriad
of plays and musicals, screenplays,
radio plays, and scripts for radio and
television programs, as well as stories
and articles for various publications,
biographies, and textbooks. In their
work, Lawrence and Lee wanted to
make people think about mankind and
react to the world around them.
Many of their plays — Inherit the
Wind (1955), Auntie Mame (1956)
and Mame (1966) (the musical onstage
version of Auntie Mame), The Night
Thoreau Spent in Jail (1970), and First
Monday in October, (1975) — are hailed
as contemporary classics and have
been translated and performed in
over thirty languages. Their work has
received much critical acclaim and
been honored with numerous awards,
including The Donaldson Award for
best new play (1955) for Inherit the
Wind, The Variety Critics Poll award,
both in New York (1955) and London
(1960), for Inherit the Wind, The Lifetime
Achievement Award from the American
Theatre Association (1979) and many
more. In 1990, Lawrence and Lee were
inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame
and received membership in the College
of Fellows of the American Theatre.
Jerry Herman is a
composer and lyricist, known for his
work in Broadway musical theater.
He composed the scores for the hit
Broadway musicals Hello, Dolly!, Mame,
and La Cage aux Folles. Many of
Herman’s show tunes have become pop standards.
His most famous composition,
“Hello, Dolly!”, is one of the most
popular tunes to have originated in
a Broadway musical, and he is one
of only two composers/lyricists to
have three musicals run more than
1500 consecutive performances on
Broadway (Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage
aux Folles). He has been nominated
for the Tony Award five times, and
won twice, for Hello, Dolly! and La
Cage aux Folles. In 2009, Herman
received the Tony Award for Lifetime
Achievement in the Theatre. He is
also a recipient of the 2010 Kennedy
Center Honors.

HISTORIC NOVEMBER THEATRE
Patrick Dennis was an American author
born in Chicago, Illinois. He was the
author of sixteen satirical novels and
originator of Broadway characters
Mame Dennis (Auntie Mame, 1956,
and Mame, 1966) and Belle Poitrine
(Little Me, 1962). His novel Auntie
Mame: An Irreverent Escapade, based
on his own childhood experiences,
was one of the bestselling American books of the 20th century. The
first edition of Auntie Mame spent 112
weeks on the bestseller list, selling
more than 2,000,000 copies in five
different languages. At the height of
its popularity, it was selling more than
1,000 copies a day. In 1956, with books
Auntie Mame, The Loving Couple:
His (and Her) Story, and Guestward,
Ho!, Dennis became the only writer

November Theatre was named the
Empire. It was Richmond’s first integrated theatre post Reconstruction.
Virginia’s earliest Jim Crow Laws banned
black theatregoers from all entertainments patronized by whites. Moses
Hoffheimer, developer of the Empire,
proposed converting his theatre’s gallery
(the top balcony) from a seating area
reserved for the “gallery gods” (young
white ruffians who filled a similar balcony
at Richmond’s Academy of Music) to a
segregated seating area for black audiences. At Hoffheimer’s urging, Virginia’s
Jim Crow Laws were re-written to state,
“Every person... operating... any public
hall, theater, opera house, motion picture
show or any place of public entertainment which is attended by both white
and colored persons, shall separate the
white race and the colored race.”

It seems regressive now, but Hoffheimer’s efforts to seat black and white
audiences under the same roof were progressive for their time. Forty-three years
later, the founders of Barksdale Theatre
would put the next nail in the coffin of
Virginia’s Jim Crow theatre law. In 1954,
Pete Kilgore and Muriel McAuley invited
a group of professors and students from
Virginia Union University to join their
white audience at Hanover Tavern, sitting
side by side. In open defiance of the
law and risking arrest, they presented
the first fully integrated performance in
Virginia post Reconstruction.
When the Empire opened in 1911, it operated as a legitimate theatre, presenting
live performances of great plays instead
of vaudeville or silent movies. The
renowned actress Lucille La Verne, a veteran of seven Broadway hits, assembled
her own stock company at the Empire
in 1913. She presented 80 performances
in four months, selling 147,000 tickets!
Edith Lindeman, Times-Dispatch theatre
critic, wrote that the Empire “was a popular theater with audiences, especially on
Wednesday matinees when each woman
in attendance received a quarter-pound
box of Huyler’s chocolates and a dainty
linen handkerchief to wipe her eyes
during the sad scenes.”
