To identify the major Greek Gods and Goddesses, and contrast them with 20th century
heroes.

Research a hero from Greek Mythology

Write and present a speech about a contemporary hero
Construct and present a culminating project contrasting a hero from Greek mythology
with a hero from the 20th Century

The teacher will collaborate with the LMS to obtain electronic and print sources. The
LMS will also teach students how to properly cite sources.
Students will complete research notes and Venn Diagrams to prepare their speeches.
Motivation :
The teacher will write the word MYTH on a large sheet of paper or board. The students
will work in small groups to define he word. The teacher will chart responses to
construct a class definition for the word MYTH. The teacher will guide student’s recall
of myths they have read or heard. Common origins of myths will be discussed such as
their role in explaining natural phenomenon like changing seasons, eclipses, and tides.
Students will explore other themes associated with myths such as creation, death and
the after-life. The teacher will explain that some Greek heroes were vain or lucky
while some were resourceful and heroic.
Student Friendly Objectives
Students will define the word “myth” and demonstrate an understanding of the origin
and elements of myths.
Students will research an assigned Greek God, Goddess or hero
Presentation: The LMS will demonstrate the use of pre-selected websites and print
sources to complete the Greek mythology portion of the assignment. The LMS will
also teach students how to cite sources. The LMS and teacher will distribute research
notes pages that list the questions to be answered. The teacher will review the facts
that should be included in the report (Greek name, powers/responsibilities, family
relationships, character traits ,and symbols).
Student Practice Procedures: Students will review the research notes page and
questions and begin their research.
Guided Practice: The teacher and LMS will circulate around the room to monitor
completion of the research form and answer questions..
Process Day 2
Closure: The teacher will give the students a list of contemporary heroes (provided by
the LMS) that they can choose from to research the following day. Each student must
choose a different hero.
Motivation: The teacher will write the word HERO on the board. Students will
brainstorm words associated with heroes in a small groups. The teacher will chart the
responses to form a class definition for the word HERO.
Student Friendly Objective:
Students will define the characteristics of a contemporary hero.
Students will choose and research a contemporary hero from a list provided by the
LMS.
Students will create a symbol to represent their contemporary her.
Presentation: The teacher will model the process of choosing a contemporary hero
from the list provided. The teacher will create a symbol that represents the
contemporary hero based on his or her life and accomplishments. The LMS will review
electronic and print resources compiled to complete the research. The teacher will
review facts that should be included in the report (name, date of birth, hometown,
obstacles, family relationships, character traits, and achievements).
Student Practice Procedures: Students will review the list of contemporary heroes to
choose from. Students will review the list of required data to research.
Guided Practice: The teacher and LMS will circulate to answer any questions and
review the research notes page as well as citations.
Closure: Students submit an exit ticket listing one similarity or difference between the
Greek mythological figure and the contemporary hero they have chosen.
Process Day 3
Motivation: Students are given facts about life in ancient Greece as well as life as we
know it today. Students practice using a Venn Diagram to contrast life in ancient
Greece with modern life.
Student Friendly Objectives:
Students will complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting life in ancient
Greece with modern life.
Students will complete research on Greek mythological figures and contemporary
figures.
Students will construct a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting their Greek
mythological figure and their choice of a contemporary hero.
Presentation: The teacher will pool student responses to complete the example Venn
diagram comparing and contrasting ancient Greece with modern day life..
Student Practice Procedures: Students will work to complete a Venn diagram
comparing and contrasting their Greek persona with their contemporary hero.

Students will practice their speech with a partner. Partners will assess each other
using the rubric provided.
Guided Practice: The teacher and LMS will circulate and conference with students as
they complete their diagram and assignments.
Closure: Students will turn in their peer assessment forms

Motivation:
Student Friendly Objectives: Students will present a speech to the class describing a
Greek mythological figure, a contemporary hero, and the similarities and differences
between them.
