“Basics of Infection Prevention in Outpatient Hemodialysis Centers”
Course
Course Description:
In 2016 the HAI Program will be providing a 6 hour basic infection prevention educational program for
facility administrators and associated staff working in outpatient dialysis facilities. The course will be held in
several locations throughout California during the months of April, May, and June. There is no cost to
attend however space will be limited; pre-registration is required.
This course is intended to provide an overview of basic infection prevention principles in the outpatient
dialysis setting including topics such as hand hygiene, standard precautions/PPE, environmental cleaning
and disinfection, BSI prevention, safe infection practices and NHSN surveillance and reporting.
Suggested Audience:


Dialysis facilities quality improvement staff, facility administrators, or clinical managers interested in
learning more about infection prevention strategies.
RNs, LVNs or technicians in dialysis facilities, with infection prevention responsibilities or interest in
infection prevention.
Primary Objectives:
1. Identify evidence-based practices for bloodstream infection (BSI) prevention
2. Discuss practices to reduce the risk of environmentally-related healthcare-associated infections
3. Review importance of proper hand hygiene practice
4. Review standard and transmission-based isolation precautions
5. Discuss the impact of unsafe injection practices on patient and healthcare worker safety.
6. Discuss the importance of surveillance and use of the National Health Safety Network (NHSN)
Approved California Board of Registered Nursing, BRN Provider number 10386 for six (6) contact hours
