Infection Control Annual Statement
2015-16
Purpose
This annual statement will be generated each year. It will summarise:





Any infection transmission incidents and any action taken (these will have been
recorded in accordance with our Significant Event procedure)
Details of any infection control audits undertaken and actions taken.
Details of any infection control risk assessments undertaken.
Details of staff training.
Any review and update of policies, procedures and guidelines
Background
Alastair Ross Medical Practice has two leads for infection, prevention control.



Una Taylor – Practice Nurse
Significant Events
In the past year there have been no significant events raised that related to infection
control.
Audits
A hand hygiene audit was performed on the following dates
19.5.15, 4.6.15, 13.7.15, 29.2.16, 3.3.316, 7.3.16 and 10.3.16
and audited by Ellen Davies. There were 51 responses from patients who had been
examined by Health Care Professionals in the practice and the results are available in a
separate document. This highlighted the importance of hand washing for all staff involved
in patient care and the recommended method and procedure to follow when washing
hands.
An audit of the sharps boxes was carried out in March 2016. (see below).
An Environmental check of the surgery was carried out quarterly (see below).
Risk Assessments
The Practice used an audit tool for a clinical infection control inspection.
This included:
Sharps handling and disposal was checked in March 2016. Point of action from this is to
ensure the sharp boxes are all labelled with source from which they came and that new
boxes put out have lids securely attached.
Cleaning of equipment 100% compliancy achieved.
Environment including checking of cleanliness with 98.92% compliancy achieved.
Cleaning products 100% compliancy achieved.
Vaccine transport and storage with 100% compliancy achieved
Staff Training
Infection control courses are completed on-line by staff under Bluestream Academy.
An Infection Control update at the Practice Nurse Forums has been arranged for April 2016
and it is intended that all the nurses will attend.

Hand Hygiene Audit and Infection Control Audit – Sister Davies at various dates 2015-16 (see
originals).
Audit for Sharps Handling and Disposal March 2016 – planned to repeat May 2016.
Policies, Procedures, Guidelines
Most policies are formally reviewed annually, however all are amended on an ongoing basis
as current advice changes, or need arises.
