HSBC Global Asset Management Engagement Policy 2016 Engagement Policy We believe that environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors can have a long-term impact on the performance of companies. We recognise a fiduciary responsibility for the oversight of companies in which we have invested on behalf of our clients. ESG issues are raised by our fund managers and analysts in the course of their dialogue with companies to the extent relevant to the investment thesis. We have a complementary rolling programme of ESG engagement, covering a proportion of all companies in which we are invested, whether actively or through passive / quantitative models. We assess all investee companies using specialist external ESG research providers. We contact companies to raise issues highlighted by that research, by our own investment processes or in pursuit on particular engagement themes. As global investors, we are sensitive to local variations in practice but we normally expect companies to meet recognised norms such as the Global Compact, ILO standards and OECD governance codes. Our engagement objective is to provide companies with the opportunity to explain their approach in the management of particular ESG issues. Engagement may take the form of correspondence, conference calls or meetings. The company’s response will inform our assessment of risks associated with our investment. 2 Integrated Structure The following organisation chart illustrates the ESG research and corporate governance structure.
